Hi all im new to the forum and this is my first post, apologies if it is in the wrong place.
Below should be some photos of a cockerel that i hatched about 6 months ago, what i would like to know is what is his breed im guessing that there is some welsummer in him but crossed with what ?? and also he is crowing like a good un and is treading the hens, i have candled the eggs but to no joy, So at what sort of age should he be mature enough to fertilize the eggs ??

Many thanks

I would say something mediterrean crossed with cream legbar maybe as he has white earlobes, lovely looking rooster! :D

Cheers Foxy

Yep hes definitely a stunner, one of my neighbours has moaned slightly but all the others think hes fantastic, so hes here to stay. He is one of 7, the others are 2x warren cross 1x light Sussex and 3x lavender bantams.

Any thoughts as to when the eggs will be fertile, hes very active with the other Hens, but had no joy when i candled them.

Regards

He may just be a little young, although he looks fertile enough! ;) Maybe wait until early spring, sure he will be filling eggs then!
had another look at your photos and I wonder if he has Leghorn in the mix as well? He should breed some good layers if that's the case! :D

when you say you have candled the eggs you dont actually mention how long you have been incubating them for? maybe you are candling them too early? have you had good hatch rates before? he should be fertile, he definately looks in good health and is definately sexually mature.

Nice looking boy you have there :D you should get some lovely chicks from him & your hens next year!

cream legbar x? was my first thought too.

Thanks all for your comments.

He was hatched by one of my broody bantams, i didn't have a male bird at the time so got some eggs from where my father works as they are fertile and let her carry on sitting.
Just spoke to my father and he informs me that the rooster they have at work is a Welsummer X Brahma !! would that make any sense ?? im not sure what he mated with as they have lots of breeds either way im pleased with the result, even if hes becoming a little grumpy, "chasing my Labrador up the garden"

If im honest this will be the first time i have tried to hatch from my own stock, the first lot of eggs that i candled were about 2 weeks old and there was nothing. what sort of time do i need to leave them for before checking them ??

If he was to breed with my light Sussex any ideas as to what i could expect ? is this a common thing ? As said i am new to this so any advice and input i am grateful of.

I will get some photos up shortly of the other girls.

Thanks again

Hi, most people candle the eggs at 7 days- some at 10 days, once experienced you can tell at 3/4 days.
By 7-10 days you should be able to see the embyro developing easily.
regards, David :)

were the eggs in an incubator or under a hen? could it be the fault of either that they are clear? ie; wrong temp/humidity in incubator or broody hen not sitting well?

Hi, A good looking fellow. Just wonder about the colour of the egg he came out of, I'm no expert but it may be an indication of his lineage. Blue is a Legbar, white could be Lehorn? he has got some barring which suggests a Barred Rock lineage!?!? They lay a pinky brown egg. Welssummer are a very dark brown at the beginning of the season.
