Hello, I am Naomi, a student vet nurse a few days ago I was working at he vets when a man came in dripping wet hand cuffed to a police man, basically two boys threw a brick at a poor ducks head and knocked it clean out, the man swam to retrieve it and then battered the boy that he caught, anyhow the boy rang the police and the poor man was arrested and on the way to the police station fetched the duck to me. The duck was unconscious for 3 hours and then recovered I took him home and poor thing he can't be released, he has neurological problems so can't be kept with a few ducks (one preferably one). I have named him Bruno and he is doing very well and today I went out and bought a female 9 weeks old khaki campbell duck I have named her Esmay. Bruno isn't half proud of his new girlfriend. How old do ducks start laying?
WoW! What a incredible story, well done for taking the lad on! 08 08
Ducks normally start laying at around 5 months old depending though on the time of year. I have found that spring hatched ducklings don't tend to lay until the following February, lay like mad all summer then stop around August until the following spring. Not sure though if commerical breeds are the same I have only kept Runnners and Muscovies
Thank youu I couldn't leave him, I have wanted to keep chickens and ducks forever, though I've jumped in at the deep end and I have no idea what the hell I'm doing..
Aww how sad. Makes my blood boil when I hear of the cruel things people or kids do. I'm such an animal lover hence I have a farm full of them! I do feel sorry for the man it's difficult situation to be in as I would want to do the same but obviously shouldn't! Nice to know the duck has obviously found a loving home, and girlfriend!I'm afraid I have no advice to give as I do not keep ducks YET! I'm sure you will find keeping poultry and waterfowl very addictive as I and many others on the forum have. I started with 6 chickens and now have 50 odd and just bought a piglet as well as having 2 sheep, 2 horses, a cat and St Bernard which came from a rescue centre welcome to the forum by the way it's a great place to find advice from experienced poultry/waterfowl keepers and full of very friendly people
