Hello

Have just joined the forum and intend getting 3 sussex hens for my garden when thier new home is sorted out .

Hi David and welcome to the forum. There are a few of us from South Wales on here now :D

I keep speckled sussex large fowl. They are lovely birds, friendly and great for beginners.

Hi David & welcome from me too :-)08

I keep bantam Light & Red & LF Silver amongst others. Agree they are really friendly birds.

Thanks for the welcome.

Because the wife is determined to keep her flower beds intact there may not be as much space as I first thought. I would be happy to keep bantam sussex instead of full size hens but wondered how small the eggs would be. Are bantam eggs a quarter of the size of the large hens?

Hi David,

I usually use 2 bantam eggs in place of a "normal" egg in cooking so it's more like they are around half the size. The size of egg does vary with the breed of bantam though- my pekins lay smaller eggs than my poland bantams for example.

NCOTB would be able to advise you on the size of the sussex bantams eggs as she keeps them ;)

Bantams are a great choice for a smaller space- The feather footed breeds are meant to be less destructive in gardens but to be honest my pekins love a good scratch around just like all my other chickens- I'd say the sussex LF are the worst breed I have for digging great big holes to bathe in though!

Like pebojuno I use 2 bantam eggs instead of 1 full size. My LF silver lays enormous eggs! though she is in her 3rd year of lay.The red sussex bantams havent been laying long so eggs havent reached there fullsize yet, but wouldnt say they are small & on the whole nice yolks too! about half the size of normal LF eggs. Yummy!

bear in mind though that the bantam egg is from a young hen & the LF is in her 3rd year of laying HTH

Thanks to all for your help,it's much appreciated. The pics from nctb are particulary welcome, thanks for going to the trouble of doing that.

It will be a little while before the house is ready but I hope to have a trio of sussex bantams before the end of February. There are a few suppliers in the Vale of Glamorgan but am not sure if they raise buff bantams so I may have to travel or settle for my second choice of light sussex.

This is a very friendly forum and I am looking forward to becoming more involved in the future.

David.
