Just to let everyone know, we had our four girls delivered yesterday afternoon and settled them into their new home, kept them in their run and coop all day today and after i finished work today i had a wee sneaky look into the coop and there they were one in a nesting box which had been emptied and an egg left and then in the corner of the coop next to their perches i found another!! Two in the first 24hrs! :P

Is it quite normal for them not to be laying in the nesting boxes? The nest box with the egg in it had all the straw and sawdust removed first? :?

One large light coloured egg with tiny white speckles and then a smaller light brown egg, how do you learn which chook lays which type of egg? We have a Rhode Rock, Speckeldy, Sussex Ranger and a Blue Ranger?

Thanx in advance for your knowledge everyone :) Kim

hi, if you can get hold of a "pot egg"- ( a false plastic/china egg- most feed merchants sell them) or two and put them in the nest boxes for the first few weeks- this encourages the girls to lay in the right place- some do lay on the floor every now and then- normally if the nest boxes are full and the hen cant wait any longer :D They will get the hang of it.
As for your eggs-i dont keep hybrids but can have a rough guess going by the names- the Rhode rock and sussex ranger should lay light brown/tinted eggs- the "speckeldy" ( a maran hybrid i think!) a dark brown egg and the blue ranger/Blubell- a brown egg ( a Rhode Island red x maran )- i am sure someone with hybrids will come along soon and correct me
regards, David

Congratulations, it's a lovely feeling to have the first egg. Ours came along a couple of days ago. We also have a Black/Rhode Rock, Speckeldy and a Bluebell/Blue ranger and we also have a Warren. Our Black Rock, Lulu is the only one laying because she's a couple of weeks older and her eggs are a light brown.

Also just to let you know, our bluebell has started laying and her eggs are a creamy colour, the Black Rock eggs are definately darker than hers.

Hi David thanks for the advice, caught Gladys (the Speckeldy) in the nestingbox today whilst the others were out in the garden so i sat and watched her for a couple of minutes out of her sight and she kept scratching and scratching away at the floor of the nesting box?! :? Looked at it tonight and she has taken quite a bit of wood away doing all her scrapping

There was sawdust and hay in there yesterday so i know its been Gladys thats been there the last couple of days going by her antics today! ;)

Hi Pony Girl there names are Beryl (Blue Ranger), Gladys (Speckeldy), Millie (Sussex Ranger) and Ms Clutterbuck (Rhode Rock). In the midst of trying to get the pics sorted and posted up...., watch this space!

Hi again Welshchick, thank you thank you :) It was such a lovely feeling it made it all feel complete having the girls finally here and settled down in their new home :D

How weird is that you having three of the same?! Whats your Warren like to look at? Still learning the different names and breeds :?

Well i have had so far by the end of today i have one large whitish egg, one smaller whitish egg and three browny coloured eggs. At least two of the brownish ones are from Gladys the Speckeldy but not totally sure who is laying and who isn't with the others, keep trying to catch them out, but no luck!

Welshchick me again, i think the smaller whitish one will be from Beryl the Bluebell going by what you said in your last post thanks so much! People have been asking who has laid which and i don't have a scoob

Hi Kim,
All four are laying now and their eggs are very different. Lulu the Black Rock's are light brown, Matilda the bluebell's are creamy, Shelley Speckleton (guess which hen) are very brown and speckled and Teetra the Warren's are very brown-not speckled. Think your Sussex must be laying the other whitish eggs although Lulu's 1st egg was huge and have been smaller since.
It is odd that we have three of the same hens at the same time and the same coop too!! It's obviously good taste :P
Our Warren is brown, she looks like a typical battery hen but with feathers! She is the youngest but most inquisitive and tried to follow me into the kitchen today. Would love to have a Sussex but the woman who supplied them didn't have any. Originally wanted Bantams but went to see a woman who was recommended, just to get some advice and fell in love with the hens there and then. Held Lulu and that was it, had to have her :D Will post some pics if I ever work out how!
Good luck with the 'who's egg' riddle.

Oh Judith you need to get some pics on of your girls, if i managed to get the pics on you'll managed just fine. My head doesn't do the technology side of things easily anymore :? Once you do it the first time you'll be sticking a pic on every two mins like i did last night!!
