Hi there,
We are new to this forum.
We have four 6 week old Embeden goslings.

We are totally new to goslings...

When will we need to clip their wings?
Im worried it may be painful or without prior experience we may do it wrong...

Any help would be great

Thanks

Sophie

Hi Sophie :)

welcome! I am not sure at what stage this breed can fly, but wing clipping is painless and just involves cutting off the flight feathers on one or two sides. Once feathers are fully grown, you cannot hurt them but cutting them as long as they are not blood feathers which would be obvious.

Perhaps someone here can give you some more information.

As far as I'm aware, Most domestic geese and particularly Heavy breeds like Embdens are not capable of sustained flight. They may run and flap and leave the ground for a few moments but are far too heavy to take off and fly away. I've never heard of anyone clipping the wings of Domestic Goslings of any breed?
Lighter breeds such as Romans or Pilgrims might just stand a greater chance of becoming airborne, but again, I've never come across a Goose keeper who's needed to clip their wings to prevent escape.

Were the same, have 6 geese and others before them but never clipped the wings. I must be doing some thing right if they do not want to fly off.
But I Known that its the first 5 flight feathers on one wing, Its about 3" of feathers before the vein but check it out on ours before cutting. And if not shore then dont cut.

If you have bleeding after which means you have cut to far, then you can get a sort of gel which sets from the vet. Its for dogs ideally for when you cut there nails and it again is cut to far back as they can bleed for weeks on dog.

I think I would leave it tho and just see how they are first.

Good luck

Matt

Thats great thank you for that advice.
They are spoilt rotten so hopefully they will never want to leave us!
