:D have managed to work out (I think) what is wrong with my hen. Looks like she has an impacted crop according to info on health. Will know try to follow advice by getting neighbour to help me massage her crop after giving olive oil and push out through beak. I think she is alos hen responsible for laying eggs with soft shells, does this tie up with her condition? Advice please.

Hello Annambrose and welcome to the forum. Impacted crop will be a hard lump and poos will either be mainly water, few or very squitty. We are treating one of ours at the moment. Olive oil and a regular massage is usually all that's required as the stuff then passes through the digestive system. Sour crop can need draining but it's a risky business as they can suffocate. So risky we have never attempted it but have used a special syringe and tube to suck it out (which the vet kindly gave us).

Soft shells shouldn't be directly related but may resolve when she is back to top condition, as all things contribute, particularly stress.

Hi, thanks so much for your feedback. I was decideing as to wether it was impacted crop or sour crop, her crop had felt a bit like a ballon full of water and so i turned her upside down and massaged her crop and neck and loads of cloudy coloured water came out, it smelt a bit sour. She suddenly seemed much brighter and continued to be so for the rest of the day, however she is not so good again today although is eating small amounts, do you thinknthis mightnbe sour crop and not impacted crop? She is also being excluded by the other 3 hens.

Hi, Annambrose, yes we're glad you've joined the forum as well, welcome.
Certainly sounds like sour crop, and if you have successfully drained it, you will have helped her. If it felt like a balloon full of water, and liquid came out, I would think that was her problem. An impacted crop would feel all hard and lumpy, and nothing would come out if you tried to drain it. If she were mine, I would take her to the vet ASAP, as she probably has some kind of gut infection, which might be cured by antibiotics, and the accumulation of fluid in her crop might be a symptom of this main cause. You might need several goes at drainage, when you see she is feeling worse again.

Thanks Marigold and Chrismahon, I think I will pop her into vet at this stage- tomorrow as it will be 4 days by then and what with the cold weather, being unwell will not help her. It's all been really helpful, thanks.

Was unable to get appointment with vet so decided to try the olive oil and massage of crop.....hey presto! Next morning she was perky and bright, noted quite a lot of poo under her place on the perch (having cleaned it out the day before) so obviously had a good pooh! Thanks so much, I will know what to do next time. Thank you so much for the tip chrismahon. Thanks for asking after her Marigold. Take care. Happy easter.
