Flooded runs

i have just been out in my run and i dont think i am going to bother trying to keep it mud free, a roof just over the big girls section could cost up to £300 as i would need at least 30 corrugated sheets and to do the bantams side it would be about £150 , have been looking at slabbing most the run but that again would be about £300 . i tried the membrane and woodchips { from tree surgeon } but when i took the whole lot up the ground underneath was so gross it made me ill but i am reading that theres yet another months worth of rain due to hit over the next 24 hrs appartently :( :( although my run looks gross i have to admit it only takes about 24/48 hrs to dry out which aint bad . so i think tonight or tomorrow i will membrane the bantams side only as thier legs need protecting but surprise surprise i have just managed to get out and lay the slabs ready for the quails run and house to go so only need to order it now and it didnt rain :-)05 wow .

When I was building a coop up in the bedroom I was thinking "I hope I don't need to use this up here!". Came back from the garden to find the cellar had water in it. Lifting the sump cover (I installed the sump 11 years ago) I relised that we only had a few hours to get everything off the floor and onto blocks. Most of it is already, just to get air around stuff. So an hour later and it's flooding faster than I expected. The pump is in and running, keeping the water about 2" below floor level. I have also got the big pump ready -gallon a second!

When it flooded 12 years ago there was no sump so the pumps just ran until they went dry and burned out! The last owner said it had never flooded and I found out later one of his kids swam in the cellar a few years earlier, it was that deep!

Oh Dear Chris this is terrible on top of everything you going thru at the moment :o When is your move day,how long do you have to put up with all that rain :-)07 In London is not as bad it was raining but we do get dry spells too and even sunshine time to time.

The forecast here is only light rain for the next 4 days Tygrysek. Based on experience, 1" of rain equates to a 12" rise in water level within the sand and gravel bed that we sit on. Takes about a week of no rain to drop 6". Coupled with the bed being 'tidal', so it rises and falls about 2" every 12 hours. So in effect the situation should remain stable but any more heavy rain and we will have a problem. We are moving stuff out of the cellar anyway to the container, so in a few days half of it will be gone. Downside is I can't work on the coops much because the sawdust will block the pump. But if it is dry I should be able to start again on Monday. Just finishing the third one -paint and assembly to do. Parts already made for fourth. I have plenty of time it's just drying the creosote well before the birds go in.

will you ever stop chris :-)05 and i thought i was busy .
well its raining here now but i did manage to get the membrane down for the bantams to walk on but i was wandering how long wuld aubroise last in thier section of the run before it needed changing this would be out in all weathers .
looks like it might be sometime before i ever extend the run to the whole plot so i really need to sort something out now but on a temparory basis .

Your talk of the cellar pump Chris has reminded me to get OH to check the underground services chamber and set the pump going if necessary. It's been pouring steadily and heavily for the last 5 hours and it's not due to stop before 7 am, and then it does it again later in the day. At this rate all the overflow moats will be flowing and the stream will come up over the footbridge.

Hope it's not as bad where you are, you have enough to cope with!

We take most things in our stride Margaid. Have the equipment to deal with most things now. We have 3 pumps, two spares 'just in case' and three 2.0KW generators for the same reason. Still have to build the 4 runs but they are simple! The first container is half full and still have the cellar stuff, a shed and our foodstore to go in -think it will fit?! Then we start packing the house contents into another container, but I haven't got the trailer delivery confirmed yet so everything is still up in the air. Will be nice waking up to the sound of our cockerels, clean air, no traffic noise, sun shining and thinking "what shall we do today?"

We are so lucky, although my home is still packed in a container 5 years down the line. We have fairly clean air (no asthmas attacks since we moved from Suffolk) only ocassional trafiic noise if the wind is blowing from Wenlock Edge, the SUN IS SHINING at the moment, just missing the hens.

Thought we'd lost one of the kittens - momma cat decided to spend the night under the upside down curved corrugated iron sheets instead of the basket under the caravan, and only had 2 kittens when she appeared this morning. OH went to have a look around and saw paw prints in one of the partly built rooms which is full of building junk. He started moving stuff and found her - she'd obviously slipped down behind some sheets of stuff and couldn't get out. She shot of like the proverbial scalded cat in the direction of the caravan and has since rather timidly crept out to eat. They're all tucked up in the basket again.

Lucky little girl Margaid. Cellar water level seems to have stabilised now so not much in but still need wellies. Just rotary wire brushed all the rust off the chiminea and treated it ready for despatch and storage- drying off in the greenhouse which we have to leave. Polytunnel frame next -new cover is already packed. Then 4 shelters to jetwash, dry and treat with Cuprinol 5 star on the green mouldy bits and then shed preserver -that could take a week! Still, I'd get bored otherwise just sitting waiting to go.
