Got a problem with rats. Been putting down the rentokil sealed rat boxes with posion in been doing it for over a month now and the darn things dont seem to be dying. They do appear to have taken four
boxes worth of the bait, although I have found several lumps around so maybe they are biting some off and taking it off. First few days the boxes are down there are just nibbles off it so they are eating some of it. I either have a mega rat infestation or the flipping things have an immunity to it. I have three pens only one has the problem. Says on the boxes each box can kill up to 10 rats that would mean i should have got forty of them dont think so. Anyone used these boxes before and had success or would I be better trying something else. Any advise appreciated.

I had a tip from a friend that keeps a large amount of poultry ,He mixes powdered polyfilla with mashed grain and when the rats drink ( I will leave that to your imagination ) He says that if the chicken eat it by mistake it doesn't affect them but dont take that for granted ,I haven't tried it myself as our cats keep the vermin under control .

hi rotten lettuce have pm you.
Should have changed my location on profile have moved further south now. My mother originally came from your neck of the woods and we used to live Harrogate area. Thanks for offering your help.

hi portmead
I gotta a cat too but he too busy killing rabbits I think. With me using posion bit worried that he will kill one now. Also got two dogs so your suggestion of the polyfilla might be good idea. Could put it out a night and take in during the day when dogs out. Cat far too fussy to touch anything like that I hope. I am a bit of a softy though and like to kill things as humanley as possible sounds a pretty nasty death. Well fed up of them now though so might just have to go for it especially after reading all the horror stories of how they kill chicks.

aahhhhhhhh
now that sounds as bad a death as the outlandish alka seltser in the bread for the gulls method

a slow painful death can't be right for any vermin
thats why i pefer terrier work to poison every time

There is a product called Eradibait which says it kills the rats in a more humane way than poison. Apparently they fall into a coma in their burrows and die. Much better than causing such a painful death with the poison! I haven't used it yet as I don't have a rat problem at the moment, but will try it when I do. I've used poison before (under much protest!) and found baby rats dying in the garden, not pleasant at all! The good thing about the Eradibait is that it is harmless to anything that may eat the dead rat, such as birds of prey.

Many local councils provide a free vermin control service, and they have access to very effective and potent ' One-feed' kill baits. Most bait available over the counter, are multi-feed poisons, meaning the rat has to return to consume a fair amount of the stuff over a period of time before it dies. Using bait like this, though effective eventually, is expensive for the purchaser, but very lucrative for the bait manufacturers!!!
Although I appreciate folks don't want to see any animal suffer, vermin or otherwise, Rats can become a serious problem VERY quickly, and personally. I'm happy to use ANY kind of effective control to combat them!

On doing research have seen the eradibait on sale as safe to none target animals and was going to buy some but when I ask I am always told the rats dont take the bait. It did seem the perfect answer to my problem worry over my other animals with posion keeps me awake at night. As I have a large garden with a woody area there are so many places the rats could drag the posion and could be found by my cat and dogs. They are practically under house arrest whilst I am sorting the problem.
Have just looked on our council website and they do say that they do a free pest control on rats so if I dont have any success I will give them a call. Even though rats are pests I would really prefer to use the lest painful way to kill them

None of the poison used in Birmingham had any effect on the rats at all - I'd suggest good old fashioned cheese and something to snap their spine.

too right on the VERY quickly point Lordcluck.
21 days gestation upto 5 litters of 14 a year......bit of maths = 1 serious problem

poison is the only solution is some cases but no matter the solution swift action is the key :-)17

should you get to the point where a clutch of chicks is disappearing I bet you wouldn't mind which method is used.
the best of luck with getting rid
if all else fails move back to Yorkshire

I've spoken to someone today who uses Eradibait and they say since they started using it they haven't seen any signs of rats! All the bait was cleared very quickly. The council use poison, so whether you put it down or them, it is still poison and dangerous to your pets.

ive used iradabait and it was useless! i had a major rat infestation a few years ago and poision is the only thing that worked and lots of it aswell. you need to put it in the tunnels and then put a slab or bricks over the hole so its safe from animals and children finding it. if they are about by the next day it will be gone and you need to keep on putting it down untill they are no longer taking it.
after i did this i was finding dead rats everywhere for weeks untill i had killed all the buggers! i wanted to kill them the humame way but it just didnt work at all. we also caught a few with rat traps but they soon get wise to them and wont go near them no matter how tempting the grub on them is. they also catch legs and tails instead of heads and you will find yourself an alive rat with broken limbs in need of dispatching which is horrible.
then once you have got on top of them keep poisoin down incase they come back so you can nip it in the bud straight away. horrible things. also make sure you really do have rats and not water voles which are a protected species! we have accidently caught one in a rat trap. the poo of water voles is different and as the names suggests you should only find them near rivers and canals, we are meters away from both!

iv got mice but after my dogs got hold of poison last time im worried about using again. also chickens ate a mouse today if it had poison in it wouldnt the chicken get ill or die

Not necessarily. ive known birds eat dead mice and rats that perished from eating bait, and theyve not died or been ill from secondary poisoning. Obviously it's not ideal for birds to get hold of dead vermin, but sometimes it can't be helped.

Personaly I have a bit of Pepermint around and the house away from the hedgerow and edges. I use a covered cage trap for when things get bad occationaly, but rely on My Buff Orp Cock. He's named "Slayer" for more than one reason. I have only just been beating him in the amount got. His are VERY flat rats though :-)10 They tunnel quite a distance to try to get under the hen house, but always leave themselves vulnerable to either him or me ..... ;)

First I advise stop using those boxes!!!! When professionals use them they make sure the lumps are tied so that the rats cannot carry them off. If bait is left lying around it can kill half the wildlife and dogs and cats in your area! The best thing to use is the rentokil box of lose green grain. You simply tip it down the hole and cover it with somethig waterproof. NB If any bait gets wet it is no longer effective.
