Hi all.
not very big news but it is for me. I went out today as normal to feed and let everyone out and my little black pekin was chattering away to me, much louder than normal. I didn't take much notice to start with just telling her not to be so bossy and she would have to wait her turn to be fed like everyone else(and yes I do talk way to much to my chooks  ) . she went on shouting at me so I went to see what the problem was and she had laid an egg. first one Ive had from my girls since there winter break. not big news really but she is one of the chickens I took in in september after they were neglected by there owner, she was at deaths door as almost starved to death nothing but bone and scruffy feathers. No feathers on her feet and full of scaley leg. I wasn't even sure she would recover so for her to be the first to lay must mean she is well on the way to recovering. just hope the little RIR she came with isn't far behind her.

That first egg is always exciting- and even better because it's from a bird you nursed back to good health- I've got 19 week cream legbars- can't wait for the first blue egg :D

Hi Stepyone,
that's brilliant, congratulations and well done on getting her healthy again.

yeah you should of seen me in the garden beaming from ear to ear telling her how clever she was and I was sorry for not listening to her. anyone walking by must of thought I was a right loon

Well done on your 1st egg, so glad you saved them from a miserable life, and no you are not mad I talk to mine boys and girls all day long!

I always thank mine for the eggs.Everyone around here already knows I'm a loon :D .

So do I !! Didn't think anyone was as silly as me - I always say "thankyou girlies" - feel guilty if I don't -ha!

LOL,oh Anne,that's exactly what I say....for each egg.Great minds think alike eh!!!!

oh good
I tell mine they are good girls and say thank you aren't you clever. Unless they are broody then we argue over who gets the eggs me or them lol

its nice to know I'm not the only one who has conversations with chooks. mind you it doesn't end there I talk to my aviary birds and think I may talk a bit to much to my eggs when incubating even telling them to hold on tight when I turn them

Hi,
Congratulations on your lovely healthy hen and your well deserved 1st egg.
Everyone thinks I'm a complete nutter chattering away to my hens, cats, dog, plants or anything really. But I always maintain it's a natural thing to. All animals recognise the voice of their owners (it doesn't really
matter whats being said!) - they know when you're happy, sad, angry etc. Very often I use my own animal language which is complete nonsense to us humans, but the chooks seem to understand it alright!
Bet no one plays music to their hatching eggs during incubation and has a little chat though!!!!
Ok, got to go, men in white coats coming.

All the best.
