Hi gang, it's been a while hope you're all well.
Just wanted to run something by you very quickly.
My marans went off lay for a few days , 3-4 and I immediately gave her and the others a thorough dusting and frontline, no mites found but just in case.
Stuck her in a bath in case she was egg bound.
Anyways she has since passed an "abomination" this morning slap bang in the middle of the garden, it was like 2 (maybe even 3) eggs all mutated and conjoined , it was gross.
Can I assume she was indeed bunged and what should I be keeping an eye out for if anything over the coming few days.
Ciao y'all x

Hi Aileen

I will be interested to hear any replies to your query. I don't know whether you saw my post about losing my Barnevelder overnight, but she hadn't laid for about a week and I didn't think anything of it, I just thought she was having a rest. Should I be worried if a hen stops laying? Even if she is perfectly well and acting normally?

Hi Aileen,
We've had a few like that. They then don't lay for a while and a few weeks later and then they are off laying again. Don't know why, could be stress or impending illness but we've never had any adverse problems as a result. Only time there is a problem is if a shelled egg bursts and the shell cuts internally and an infection develops. Recently a hybrid, who laid an extra large (over 73 grammes) every day missed a day. I was worried about egg bound but no trips to the nest box and no agitation so ruled it out. Next day she laid a 126 gramme double yolker! Then back to normal -Gracie's a great hen.

Hmm All these giant eggs! It sounds as if they've started putting too much hormone in the feed! One possible help might be reducing the percentage of layers mash or pellets. Give them more corn.
