:( Following on from my last post re: poorly Marans "any ideas on this?" Well, sadly she is no more. Poor thing, she had been coping so well & I thought she was getting a bit better, definately no worse anyway. But when I went to lock them up last night she hadn't gone into the coup with the others & was sitting huddled up on a tree stump outside the house.

This meant only bad things which turned out to be egg peritonitus which cannot be cured. Apparently what happens is that they release eggs which don't go the right way but go into the stomach. The Vet couldn't give me any reason why this happens but apparently he said that approx 20% of ex-batts get this.

So now I'm down to 3 from my original 7

So sorry you lost your girl.
I know how soul destroying egg yolk peritonitis can be, I lost a couple of very good hens to it and could do nothing, makes you feel totally useless!

Sorry to hear about your poor girl. Since keeping chickens for about a year and a half we have lost 2. I think you just have to give them a good life and enjoy them for as long as they live, There are always many more which need a good home. :)

I am sorry for your loss, I have 2 of my ex batts at the moment which have got slight "prolapses", I have inserted their bits back in, keeping them seperate from the other birds and on a wheat only diet, will see how they get on over the next few days.
