yesterday when i got home at around 4 pm i went straight out to do the girls and saw a few snail shells inside the run just behind the door and thought nothing of it until i started to poo pick and there must of been 50 plus shells in my run , some of them were whole but looked dead others had greeny bubbles in the shells of course the girls probably ate most of them but i am very angry as i dont know where they have been wether they had traces of slug pellets on or anything , no one is owning up to putting them in there and thats really making me mad .
i am now the site rep for our allotment site which kinda means i have a little bit of power to do something , i have signs up saying 'please do not feed the birds ' right next to the doorway as a few yrs back someone was feeding them raw potatoes but that seems to get ignored so far he girls seem fine but i am still worried .
can eating to many snails do them damage and give them guts ache??

Danger of eating snails Karminski is the internal gut parasites they contain. We never deliberately feed ours snails, but if they find one and eat it I don't worry.

Slug pellets would worry me as well. But usually they die very quickly after eating them and the pellets get washed away quickly so it is unlikely anyone is using them at the moment -no crops to protect anyway. I guess someone has been digging their plot over and has saved them to give to your chickens thinking they were doing you a favour. Best adise them to dispose of their snails in the dustbin, as we used to do until we got a hedgehog!

we do still have people growing stuff here but i dont think they are using slug pellets ,but the people on both sides of the run live on using slug pellets and that frightens me i didnt think about the parasites that snails could have the girls havent long been wormed literally a few weeks ago do u think i should treat them again just in case .

If they've been done recently I wouldn't o them again until at least 4 months gap have passed. In any case, if you are one of the lucky few with some Flubenvet left, best hang on to it until you really need it as who knows when we can all get some more?
Don't worry about the snails, just keep an eye on the girls and maybe put up a notice saying Please Do Not Feed Anything To These Chickens, especially SNAILS!

Have I missed something? Is there a problem getting Flubenvet?

There has been a national shortage of Flubenvet all summer as all the retailers gradually sold out and no more was coming down the supply chain. Recently even Marriages had to suspend production of treated pellets as they couldn't get the powder to put in them. Nobody seems to know why the shortage has occurred, and if anyone knows of a black market source of supply, a lot of people will be very interested to hear about it!

spr center have got the pre mixed flubenvet in stock

I didn't know anything about it! Luckily I had a new pot that I'd ordered in the spring. Perhaps I could start selling it for £100 a gram! Anyone interested?

As there has been a shortage for some time apparently, I'd carefully check the expiry dates on any feed which has Flubenvet included and any stocks of powder - it could be well out of date.

There are probably lots of very grateful chickens around who will not have to tolerate being wormed every few weeks !
