So say I to a neighbour a couple of miles away. ‘If you were to mate your Dorset Horn Ram (one pictured above) to a couple of your Hampshire Ewes (he has a raft of different breed) this autumn I’d be very keen to buy a decent ram lamb from you next back’end’. Being an obliging Lancastrian ‘aye lad’ sealed the deal. So this October it’s a ram coming up from Edale and next year a ram from up island. And that should just about do me for the duration. Weird bicoloured sheep with woolly heads. I got bored with black sheep and 16 months ago kept three bicoloured sisters. They were good looking lambs, those ones that were pictured in the Shetland Times, so I couldn’t let them go as they grew to have excellent conformation and should have prolificacy as they themselves were three of quads.
And on the subject of hens our postmistress has asked me to hatch her some Welsummers next Spring. Gives me no space to hatch some Saxony ducks next year for myself. As Michael Caine might have said ‘you need a bigger shed’.
It’s a glorious sunny evening conducive to planning breeding projects. Maybe those ducks will have to wait!?
