So say I to a neighbour a couple of miles away. ‘If you were to mate your Dorset Horn Ram (one pictured above) to a couple of your Hampshire Ewes (he has a raft of different breed) this autumn I’d be very keen to buy a decent ram lamb from you next back’end’. Being an obliging Lancastrian ‘aye lad’ sealed the deal. So this October it’s a ram coming up from Edale and next year a ram from up island. And that should just about do me for the duration. Weird bicoloured sheep with woolly heads. I got bored with black sheep and 16 months ago kept three bicoloured sisters. They were good looking lambs, those ones that were pictured in the Shetland Times, so I couldn’t let them go as they grew to have excellent conformation and should have prolificacy as they themselves were three of quads.

And on the subject of hens our postmistress has asked me to hatch her some Welsummers next Spring. Gives me no space to hatch some Saxony ducks next year for myself. As Michael Caine might have said ‘you need a bigger shed’.
It’s a glorious sunny evening conducive to planning breeding projects. Maybe those ducks will have to wait!?

It’s lovely, planning projects ahead like this. I’ve just put in a large order for more tulip bulbs. Whether I shall feel so keen on actually planting them at the end of October if it’s wet and cold is another matter!
But we shall be very interested in news of your flock, HenGen, as always.

Ah. Gardening Marigold! I’ve avoided it for years but next year, or maybe even this one, we’re having a community poly tunnel erected in which we will each have a plot. So no excuse anymore for not taking a load of cuttings of shrubs that I really do need. Thing is though, I hate gardening. Love seeing other people’s efforts.
PS
Marigold, what was the name of that picture reducing site that enables anyone to post pictures here?

The app I use is called Image Size. It’s free, and easy to use once you’ve got the hang of it. You need to adjust the Width and Height measurements according to the aspect ratio of the pics you want to post, then select the next pic and click on the Choose button. Then have a look at whether it fits the frame, and adjust if necessary, before pressing Download. Then, when on the Forum you are prompted to look in your photostream to choose your photo, you need to select the reduced size version, which will be to the left of the original, which remains untouched.
