One of my hens has been coughing and sneezing for two weeks now but she is eating, drinking and laying well and appears to be quite happy. She is on a course of Baytrill but it does not seem to make much difference. None of the other hens have been affected. Has anybody any idea what this might be and what else I could try?

What kind of bedding do you use? Have you changed it recently? It may be she is affected by it and not the others.

Other than that, keep going with the TLC and can't hurt to add some garlic and ACV to the water.

Thank you for the answer however, all my hens have the cough today. The bedding is straw and it is changed every 3 or 4 days. There is no discharge from the eys or nose so I am hoping it is not too serious. I do give them organic cider in their water.

Sorry to hear they are all coughing. I guess all you can do is keep an eye on them and see if anything else occurs. If they are feeding, drinking, pooing and laying I'd take that all as being good signs.

ACV needs to be the equine kind. Stuff for humans is to refined. I get mine from feed merchants in 2L bottles usually.

Hope they stop coughing soon.

From the problems I have seen, it could be a number of things.

Chickens are prone to catching respiratory diseases - Respiratory problems in the upper respiratory tract tend to be caused by Mycoplasma infection which is usually cleared up with a course of antibiotics (like Baytrill or Tylan). The soluble powder isn't as effective as an injection. You normally get a very fast improvement in overall health- but it can take time for the respiratory infection to clear up.

Mycoplasma infection spreads really quickly. You may want to read this: Mycoplasma in Chickens.

The ACV / garlic I find helps - ACV helps cut through the mucus amongst other things and the garlic of course is excellent for their immune system to help them fight it.

Chickens can also catch a cold but I think if they are all coughing, it's worth going back to the vet and asking their advice.
