Coronavirus

Both me and OH had a nasty virus just around Xmas time - all those things. Also suppressed our appetites so our Xmas dinner went in the bin. Could have been the coronavirus as everyone expects colds/flu in December. I bought a 16 roll pack of Cushelle last week - no brainer, 9 pack was £5, 16 pack £6.50. We should be OK for a bit. OH bought a 6-pack of sanitiser from Amazon last week - it turned up today - 12 bottles! Apparently on half price special offer. I told him he could start a stall by the gate.

As long as you have had your nails done. :) :)
Bet you are pretty good at being self sufficient on the islands, and I am sure you can give Tesco a miss quite happily.
My parents (86) wanted a pack of 6 toilet rolls as they had nearly run out, all I could get was a 24 pack. I had to go through, that's the wrong size we wanted 6, can you change them. Noooo. They must be the only people to not want loads of toilet rolls.
Someone at work said their children started to panic about what would happen if there were no toilet rolls, and she cut up the newspaper into squares and said there you go. She said the look on their faces was priceless

Announced yesterday that there are three cases in Lerwick. Might have to give Tesco a miss for a couple of months!???

Can you go to Stromness instead, or is it too far? Only a little Co-op too, so probably no good for you.
Ah. Stromness is in Orkney.
Scalloway is our second town. But as bym says I can be pretty good for a while because we all have full freezers.

Oh, dear feel so stupid now - well, I am stupid! Love Orkney, never been to Shetland as you've probably guessed. Sorry!

Yes I love Orkney too. It sounds like a yarn when I tell people that Shetland is nothing like Orkney.
I think it’s best summed up by that old saying;
An Orcadian is a crofter with a boat
A Shetlander is a fisherman with a croft

Yesterday, I was totally unimpressed at a woman behind me in a queue. Too close, in these "social distancing" days. And she was hacking and coughing, sniffling and snuffling, without making any attempt to cover her mouth. And then, went within inches of a rack of hats on display at the checkout, pawed through them all, sniffling loudly all the time. She was literally coughing all over my back. My jacket went straight in the wash when I got home. And going in to "do" mum before going home, I took the jacket off, folded it inside out, and left it in the car. I already have the habit of, as soon as I'm home, changing my clothes, and at home, generally wear track suit and slippers. Yesterday, I was shopping for dau. I was able to get most of what she wanted, but had to go to a couple of shops. One place was out of pasta, and I assumed it was stockpiling, until my son in law pointed out that a lot of pasta is made in Italy.

Same thing just happened to me in a manner of speaking.
Just been into Boots pharmacy to pick up my parents prescriptions, and both the woman serving and the pharmacist had appalling colds (one hopes it was nothing worse)
I said I thought you were supposed to stay at home if you had a cold now. The curt reply was if we all had there was no one to dispense medicine or serve you.
I took the medicines out of the bags and threw away and wiped the packaging, and hope for the best now

These are the people who should be wearing masks and gloves! Because they are for protecting others, more than the wearer.

Spot on Lady A!!!

So how close is it to you all?

About 13 miles away in Basingstoke; a care home for people with dementia has closed to visitors. Presumably staff still going in and going home afterwards.
Here's where to check your area in the UK: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/f94c3c90da5b4e9f9a0b19484dd4bb14
I see Hampshire shares 2nd place for top numbers so far.

However some useful advice here from the 1918 flu outbreak;

I have taken notice as its also reasonably close (5 miles) to my mother.

Bulk buying (I hesitate to call it panic buying as I think trying to prepare for a potential fortnight or more at home will involve unusual purchasing, although obviously some people have taken it to ludicrous extremes) has even reached us in the middle of nowhere. Press reporting people are buying up tinned fish, but this morning I saw several old people in our local small supermarket (packed as market day) with armfuls of pasta and/or rice, which is definitely not usual. There was no run on toilet rolls. However, I cannot tell you why the woman in front of us was also buying half a dozen butter knives!

Butter Knives :-)19 :-)19
Seriously we have two cases in Havering where we live. I drive a bus in Thurrock which has no cases so far.
My biggest worry is we have to go into my elderly parents daily and what happens if we take it in. Although they have a district nurse daily so she could bring it in also.
Bulk buying around here is pasta, toilet rolls, pot noodles   painkillers.
I did go and order an extra lot of incontinence pants for my father in case they run short. He wont have the NHS ones. We haven't bulk bought anything.
Did hear a conversation between two women one of whom couldn't get something and had tried everywhere and her friend said "well did you try Aldi or Lidl"
"Well no, there is no need to go that low you know"

We've just been listening to the press conference about the latest measures which include asking people to stay at home for 7 days if they have a temperature or a new cough. No need to get tested or ring anyone to say what you're doing unless and until you need medical help. . Sounds good for many people who are minimally affected and will reduce the burden on NHS - but how is anyone going to know how many people are even doing this or be able to give any kind of accurate estimate of numbers nationally? They said that confirmed cases were around 600 now but actual cases could be 5000-10000. So all pretty vague really.

A girl at work just returned from a months holiday in Japan. Has a sore throat - told the boss - boss said to go home and call 111. NHS 111 told her it is OK to go back to work.... bear in mind this is a large open plan office with around 50 people at any one time on any 1 shift (3 shifts per day). She is also now working on site, albeit in an office environment, but where there are thousands of people around, all ages.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about it, but it's where she has travelled from.

Had to go to Stornoway to take Izzie to the vet to have her stitches out. She should have been before now but she's difficult to catch. Nobody was coughing in the vets although it was quite busy. Didn't go in the Co-op, left that to OH. Not sure whether the virus is on the island yet but of course the holiday season is just ramping up so I suppose it will be soon.

Beware Diane. We have a youth from here who is isolated in Lerwick where he goes to school. It is easily spread.
Amazed by what 111 said. I’m sure it will get everywhere in due course.
Nevertheless my primary emotion is interest rather than fear. It’s fascinating hearing how officialdom are dealing with it, or not. I’m more concerned about social unrest than the disease.
