Hi everyone, I have two white star chicks that I bought as hatching eggs and put under my broody, everything was great till yesterday, the chicks are now just over 6wks old and have started fighting, we think one is a cock and one a hen, one is a lot broader and they have different tails, the one we think is a hen has tail feathers like a 'hen' the other has shorter and different shape tail???

I have read that if it's just handbags to let them sort it out, but this is nasty, she was bleeding, he wasn't letting her go, I seperated them overnight and went back this morning to see if they would settle a bit, but no, they started fighting straight away, neck feathers sticking out, jumping at eachother with feet out, screaching etc, I can't let it go on, we were waiting to see if there is one of each sex and re-home the cock but it looks like I won't get that far now, any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Oh dear-----have they got enough room? Can you divide their run ? Maybe the most boyish looking one will have to be rehomed sooner than you planned. I am afraid I don't know what White Stars are so don't know what their temprament is like , if enough space they are normally fine even if both boys. I doubt there is going to be a cure for this I am afraid.Ros

are you sure they aren't both cocks and the other is just a bit runty happens all the time, we hatch loads and at 6 weeks no matter how hen like it is, weeks later you find its a cock. Could be a hen, but usually fighting only happens among cocks, unless its really vicious, sounds like you'll have to separate them because the hen like one probs won't thrive. We cull our cockerels because if there is too many the hens won't thrive and theres only so many homes you can find for cockerals and also if you do choose to rehome the cockeral make sure its going to a good home because theres so many people out there who will use the poor cockeral for cock fighting to train there cock for a match, where there game cock beats your cockerel black and blue until its half dead and fed to the ferret and theres also halal where the throat of your cockeral is cut and left there to bleed to death, so theres a few bad people out there to watch out for and a person wanting the cockeral for cock fighting training will usually pay a fiver at the most. When i was young i wanted to rehome everyone of my cockerals and some did go to good homes but unfortunately i let two hybrid cockerals (had names too) go to some cock fighters for free, only realised til weeks later....i was devastated but it taught me the lesson that sometimes its better for the cockerals to be necked than that.

Thank you for all your help, they do have plenty of room, they are mainly free ranging with the 3 hens I have, their mom (fostered as she was broody and I got her the eggs) and 2 others, I will have to accept he is not a she and they must be both boys  nevermind this is all part of having chickens, take the good and the not so good. The experience of them hatching and seeing them develop is still worth every minute, thanks again for all your help and experience :)

if they are both cocks they should be ok, because they were brought up together. Another thing is, have they got anough room, i had the same problem last year, so i built a small extension and everything was fine. another thing is, one of the birds male/female will be the most dominant, so maybe the cockeral wants to be more dominant than the hen or vice versa.
