Oh dear!

I've got a yew tree planted in the hens garden.
I didn't know that yew was poisonous to them. Is it just the berries? Hopefully I'll be able to fence off that area during berry season

Been looking this up----allsorts of opinions found! Taxines (the poisonous alkaloids) are apparently found in the needles/leaves of Yew as well as the berries and so should be highly toxic as well , have found references to chickens dying from needles and berries and also loads who say their poultry eat both the leaves and berries and are fine! Knowing just how toxic it is to mammals( even widely used as a chemotherapeutic agent ) I would not let any live creature near it! Ros

Hmmm.....

I was going to transplant another yew tree form my mothers garden to mine. Not so sure now, I think I'll have to think of alternatives to have year round green in my garden :(

We have an enormous yew tree at the end of our garden, and the chickens free range everywhere although they don't spend too much time up that end. We've had them from July last year and they're fine. They wouldn't be able to reach any berries or leaves though (and I can't remember ever seeing berries). I didn't know yew was poisonous to them until reading this !
