Can someone advise please. Just found one of our chicks caught up in wire - could have been there for hours since this morning. Syringed water into its beak and tried to get some liquidy mash in - no chick crumb available. Got it on my lap in front of heater - four weeks old - fluff fluffing up but not round neck. Keeps falling over onto its side - has it broken its leg trying to get free? Chirped a couple of times and is sitting still right now. Should I take it back to its mum and other three chicks? Or should I keep it on its own and put it on the heat in the shed? Any advice please - in a bit of a panic!!!

ooh, poor little thing,
not really sure - mum might reject it, or let it die
on its own it wont thrive, but cant really take another from mum-hen
it will need heat if you do isolate

does it seem in pain?

Hi Blue. It sat up and started chirping a little so I thought it needed its mum. It's raining so mum was in the hut with the other three - I put chick inside and went for some mash, came back and it had been kicked out. Put it back, went to get some water and it was out again, face down in the mud and rain. Mum has disowned him - heatbreaking. It's on my settee now wrapped up in a blanket. I'm watching it like mad and prod it gently when I'm not sure if it's breathing or not. Nature is horrible and I hate it! I'm hoping it's just sleeping and having a rest after being tangled up then being kicked out by its mother twice. I'm just hoping it's going to make it. Another night on the settee for me then. Maybe I'm stupid but I just thought its mum would take it back and look after it. Apart from watching it I don't know what else I can do now. Thank you so much for replying - sometimes it helps just to know I'm not alone! One more thing, it fell asleep (I hope) with some of its fluff still hard - if you know what I mean - should I disturb it now and make sure it's all fluffed up again. Sorry, but I don't know any technical terms x

Poor chick-poor you! If mum has rejected it -I would probably make it up a little box with a hottie (wrapped in towel)and loads of bedding and keep it indoors .It will have needed the syringed water -maybe try a little chopped boiled/scrambled egg. -----then,so I didn't have to keep getting up to check-I bet I'd take the box, hottie and chick to bed with me!-----hope its ok, let us all know please. Ros

Hi Ross! Didn't think of a hottie - great idea! Just gave it more water - syringe - and it's chirping away. Probably calling for its mother I guess. I have a cat basket I could use - going to get it now. x

Mother might not have rejected it, chick may just have crawled out. So might be worth trying again when the chick is stronger. You can keep an eye to see what's happening.

Hi to you all! Put it in a cat basket and wrapped it in a towel - tried to make it heavy so it thought it was its mother (I know!). We both went into the spare room last night so I kept checking on it throughout the night - it was still breathing. About 6 this morning I pulled the towel off and there was a little yellow ball of fluff looking up at me. Put it on the carpet and it started walking round and chirping! Took it outside. Mum sleeps in a hut with a little pen/run that we move out of the way to let her out onto the land with the others. She was out in the pen so I put chick down outside and mum was running up and down inside. Pulled the pen to one side and mum went straight to the chick, followed by the other three chicks. They then all ran out and started eating - like nothing had happened!!!!! I can't even tell now which chick it was! So, happy endings do happen xx It got me going though. I've spent the whole day clearing all the rubbish off the land, bits of wire, broken glass (where did THAT come from?), bits of plastic, twine (not ours I hasten to add - it was like this when we took the place over - just haven't got round to clearing it). I've been on a mission - no chick is going to get tangled up in anything on my land EVER again. Looks great, chickens followed me around all day having a ball. All is well with the world today - nature isn't so bad after all. Thanks for all your help.............feels great knowing I've - somehow - managed to bring it back to life. What a little trooper! xxxxx

thats brilliant!
you'll just have to call them all "lucky" if you can't tell which it is... :)

:D All in bed now tucked under mum, where they should be. Think it's time for a glass of wine! Many thanks for everyone's help and kind thoughts x :D
