Cheery Pics

If you're planning to come to East Kent again, do let me know. If I'm not in the middle of teaching a glass class, I'd love to buy you & Mrs BYM a drink. The same goes for Margaid & HenGen, though it's a long way for you!!

Particularly during the Spring and Autumn I see a whole selection of little browny/greeny jobs. Haven’t got a clue what they are.
“Oh look, I say, warblers”. Thankfully no one has asked me what sort. Still hoping for a passing hawfinch. Apart from the National Exhibition of Cage Birds when I was about 15 I’ve yet to see one.
I've not seen a hawfinch yet, but thanks to Merlin I heard one in a mature conifer in our garden a few months back. I wasn't sure whether it really was one, but when I played the call of a hawfinch on my phone, the bird in the conifer answered back!

There was a big influx of Hawfinch into the UK last winter, with some quite big flocks around. I was lucky enough to have a few in the local churchyard for a while.

Our go to place for them is Lynford Arboretum in Norfolk, where they pop up in the paddock on winter afternoons.

Good description Hen-Gen little green jobs in the trees, match little brown jobs on the shoreline.

Definitely springlike around here with Chiffchaff singing everywhere and a few Blackcap joining in. Lovely Short eared Owl hunting at Rainham Marsh this am.

Ok I need some tips for my wild bird feeders. I have a seed tray, a tube feeder, a water pan, a hummingbird feeder, and a suet cage feeder. I rarely see birds come by - like only when I put the unroasted peanuts out in the tray. Maybe I should start a whole new thread?

Hi Josh. Do you put out clean drinking water for the birds? That'd be my recommendation.

Yeah, I do but maybe I need to be more consistent. I just have a small shallow pan they can drink out of. I'll get something a little bigger and make sure it's always full. You're not the first person to say fresh water is key

Birds like to bathe as well, a shallow basin, like an upturned dustbin lid can be great for them, just put a stone in the middle so they can hop in and out.

Are your feeders in the open or near bushes, as birds like to make a quick foray to a feeder, then nip back to safety away from predators, esp if they have something like a nut to nibble on.

Favourite with my birds are sunflower hearts, peanuts, mealworms. Can't match anything as exotic as hummingbirds, but we have Nuthatches on our feeders, and Great spotted Woodpeckers both of which are entertaining

Snuffles (noisy eater) emerged from hibernation last night and headed to back door for food, I have been putting it out nightly for a week or two ready.
Lovely to see him/her back again
