hi guys am planning to get a few quails and however my neighbours who love to moan about everything are asking if am allowed to have them in a residential area ? i thought you could but now am not so sure ?? can anyone help ?

I can't see any problem. The male Coturnix have quite a piercing (and rather beautiful) call but nothing like as bad as a cockerel crowing his head off at 5am in summer. The hens don't make much noise at all, certainly nothing to disturb neighbours. They don't need a lot of room - many people keep them in a guinea pig cage - and I've just put mine out in a rabbit run on the lawn for the summer. If you only have a few quail you'll probably only want one male to 3-5 hens, and unless you want to breed from them I'd advise you to get all hens anyway as the male Coturnix are real rapists and can do terrible damage to the females. In this species the females are just as pretty as the males and mine are all laying an egg every day now I've got rid of the males that were chewing chunks out if them and keeping them in a state of constant terror!

i think the answer is yes, dont you just love neighbours!!!

We keep ours indoors but yep, i think you can. If you are in a privately rented property though, you may wanna check with your landlord (with regard to pets etc) but i don't see a problem. There's a guy near me who keeps chickens and we live on a housing estate.

I would'nt worry about not keeping a male, your neighbours will never work out what the noise is or where its coming from
