i wanna candle mine but she will go mad and attack me lol but there is only 9 days so i will wait :)

cant wait! i will be happy if only one hatches but if none hatch i dont matter cuz they only cost me 99p :)
 
you just have to be brave and go for it! if you do it after dark she will be okay you just need to slip a hand under her and extract and egg! then put it back where it came from and pick another one. i get told off by my hen but she doesnt hurt me. she pecks my hand but it doesnt hurt lol.

what time of day did you put your eggs under? mine went under in the evening so may hatch later on the 18th or early the next day...
 
yes should do. its very likely they will already be out and fluffed up by the time you get there in the morning. i have gone down several times on the due day to find fluffy little heads poking out the side of the hen!

dont worry though if they are not hatched just leave them well alone during hatching and sit on your hands! what will be will be...
 
sounds like they are fertile then. they do look dark if theres chicks in them. a clear looks bright and you can see the yolk floating about...

its hard to see clearly if you dont have the best candler and it really needs to be dark for you to see anything.
 
hi,

yes she needs food all the time so keep her food and water topped up. once the chicks have hatched you need to be feeding them on chick crumbs and mum will eat that aswell and stop feeding layers pellets.

they will eat chick crumbs for the first 5 or 6 weeks then you can change them onto growers pellets.

make sure the bowl with the food in is plastic and not china as if it tips over it can kill a chick if it gets trapped underneath it. i lost a day old chick because of a china bowl :(
also make sure the water bowl is shallow so they cant drown in it. you can put marbles in it to make it safe or just keep it shallow.

ok cool well shes using a 1ltr freeder and drinker so il just take the top off the freeder so its just a tray and the drinker is pretty small so they should be ok but ive got marbles anyway just incase :)

i kno yh now its close i just want it to hurry up lol
 
bad news today for mine, the hen has abandoned her eggs and they were all stone cold tonight which was sad as they were all developing.

i tried to get her back on them and re made her a nest as she had trashed it but no luck she is not interested. ive put her back in with the others. naughty girl!! im not impressed!
 
no way! bet ur gutted i kno i wud be with only 7 days left :(

mine is still on them the other hens have been around her alday and she hasnt been bothered by them when i first put her on i didnt think she would say on but im proud of her shes taken well to the eggs :)
 
yes its annoying! she is out with the others this morning in the paddock as if she had never been broody. naughty girl!

no way i didnt realise they just went off being broody lol

cheers for the reply on the cockerel :) but ive just realised i might get one out of the eggs shes sitting on lol
 
hi,

yeah you will get 50% boys on average. just one thing to remember is they will then also be related to the hens so you may want to do a swap with somebody so you dont end up inter breeding them x
 
I always breed mother to son, daughter to father, but never brother to sister - otherwise I would always be buying new cockerels - it's called line breeding - I love this thread - dying to hear the final outcome :-)08 :-)08
