BROODY AND EGGS!!!

hiya,

mine are cream legbars. i have recently swapped cockerels so they may be crossed with bluebelle or may be pure bred so im waiting to see what i get too!

good luck with yours! also if you look out for fresh poops in the run you can tell if she has been off the eggs and gone to the loo. if she hasnt been out for a poop by the evening lift her off of the eggs gently and wait for her to go. it will stop her pancaking on the eggs! make sure she has some food and water aswell. i remove the poo each day so i know if she has been out. its better not to have to pick her up but pooing on the eggs and soiling them will reduce the chances of them hatching.

good luck!

oh ok cool i wanted some legbars or some araucanas just cuz i wanted blue eggs lol

does it matter that the eggs come with a bit of poo on them?
and she comes out every morning for about 10-15 mins for something to eat and drink and a dig but i havent noticed any poo lol but there is always a poo in the nest that i pick out but she hasnt done any on the eggs yet so thats a good sign :)

cheers for the little tips :)

hi,

well im down to 4 eggs as one was on the floor outside the nest and one was broken so not sure whats going on with her.

farmerjon the cleaner the eggs the more chance they will hatch. poo on them is not ideal but dont rule them out they may still hatch. i find by the time a hen has sat on them for 3 weeks they are normally a bit sticky and dirty.

how are you getting on with yours?? how many eggs did you put under her?? x

sorry to here that :(

shes doing will i didnt think she would stay on them but she has she keeps growling when i go near her and she gets off evey morning for somethin to eat and drink so im pleased with her :) she sitting on six eggs still :)

hi,

glad yours are doing well! have you candled the eggs or are you going to leave it to nature?? hopefully my 4 left will hatch!

i was thinking of candling them but shes protective i stroked her the other day and she pecked my thumb and made it bleed lol so im just gonna leave them an see what happens :)

u candled urs?

hi,

yes i candled mine tonight to see whats going on because of her losing 2 eggs and a third later this evening. the candler is a pocket battery one as we have no power down the field and to be honest i couldnt see a great deal. 3 were dark and looking ok and the latest one to be turfed out was looking clear although i stuck it back under to give it a second chance.
if its out again in the morning i will take it out. a plug in candler works a lot better. its early days aswell i wouldnt normally candle untill day 10 if they were in my incy.
sometimes its better to leave the hen alone and trust she knows what she is doing but other times candling and removing the clears can stop them exploding under the hen and making a good mess of the others. a rotten egg under a broody hen is vile ive had it happen before! dont be too keen to remove eggs that may be fine and just need more time but in the last few days a clear egg is not going to do anything and is better off out.
its a personal choice really. normally im to impatient and look!

im just gonna leave mine in and wait and see :)

cuz she keeps pooing in the nest and its stuck to all the straw can i clean it out or would she be funny with having a fresh nest? or should i just move the bits with poo on?

personally i would clean it up if she is sitting on poo but dont clean the eggs. washing them will break down the protective seal on them and let the dirt threw the shell.

if there is a lump of straw thats been pancaked on i would get it out but yes she wont be happy with you! you have to weight it up. if chicks hatch in a pile of hot poo they are not going to do as well as chicks that hatch on nice clean straw.

is she a first time broody? she sounds like a novice! i have had quite a few that have pooed in the nest and it does make a mess. lifting her out once a day may help so she poo's outside but it also disturbs her. if she is very broody you can get away with it but if you dont think she is 100% dedicated leave her alone.

ok cool

yh i think it her first time it her first time while weve had her lol

she hasnt pooed on the eggs but shes pooed at the bk of the nest she sits on them the same way each time she goes bk in and its just mushing together and shes just got a pile of mushy poo lol

arrr i hope my girls go broody. i hatched out some pekins and polish x silkies im keeping some of the girls in hope id love to see this it sounds so eggsiting.

Hi,

Really interesting thread, thankyou!!

I have two girls trhat have gone broody over the weekend, am going to move them into broody quarters next weekend and see if they would like to sit on some eggs!! Am hugely excited!!!

Gabbie x

hi,

i had a bit of a panic today. went down the field and fed the hens some bread and went in the stable to check miss broody and she was off the eggs and running up and down the run. i thought she had given up on them. i felt the eggs and they were still warm and after having a slice of bread herself she returned to her eggs and snuggled down again, panic over!!

gabzhenz yours have gone broody early too! i dont know if you have done it before but if you are going to move your broodys its best to do it after dark and sneak the eggs under at the same time. also try and make the nest dark if you can by covering it with a towel or somthing to keep the light out, i always find they do better in a dark nest! are you going to use your own eggs or get some in?? good luck!

ive got mine in a little rabbit hutch/run cuz i didnt have anythin else and she sits in the indoor bit with her head pocking out she isnt fused but the sunlight she comes out in the morning for food and drink then goes bk in and my other hens all perch on top or dig around her and she just sits there watching lol

this is my broody pearl sitting on her eggs
only 10 more days to go im excited and cant wait :)

does anyone kno which eggs belong to which breed i had a pick a mix of eggs and the breeds he had were-

(buff, black, blue, splash and gold lace orpington)
(silver, light, buff and speckled sussex)
(salmon faverolle)
(cuckoo and wheaton french maran)
(exchequer and white leghorns)
(rhode island reds)
(barnvelders)
(welsummers)

i kno the white one is a leghorn lol

lovely eggs! i hope they hatch for you!

you have a mixed bunch. i know marans are famous for their very dark eggs so possibly no marans but thats all i can say hopefully somebody else may be able to have a better guess!

ive been looking up what they could be and i think the top egg is a welsummers or a barnevelder
the second egg is a orp then the white one is a leghorn and the bottem three are either salmon faverolle or sussex
