Hi all,

yet another problem, my poor chucks seem to be having a bad time at the moment, sadly pudding the speckled sussex with the prolapse did not make it, we just could not keep it in no matter how many times we tried.

Now Colin has broken his beak, it is the top part and it is broken about 1/4" from the end, it is still attached but is at a slightly dropped angle,
it is not bleeding but the break is red as if it has been bleeding, I just can`t think what he has been doing to have broken it.

what can I do, if anything? Colin is about four now and a grand chap I would hate to loose him also.

Hi,
just popped out to see the flock and check on Colin and the end of the beak has now dropped off, it actually does not look as bad now , do you think it will be ok, do I need to treat it with anything ?

thanks Heather

I've just posted a lengthy reply which has disappeared into the Ether MollieDSB. But most of it is redudant now that it has actually fallen off. No it should be fine and should grow back very slowly. Could take a year though. Don't think there is anything you could treat it with. Just keep an eye on it.

Just a stupid question really, but if it hadn't dropped off completely could it have been glued back on with something like Superglue?

Hi Sue. I thought the same as you in my first 'Ether' post. I guess if you could keep Colin still enough for it to set that would be the way to go. But a bit of a tricky operation with a tongue so close and a cockerel ready to jump!

I have noticed that if I post a reply at exactly the same time as someone else sometimes they go missing, rather than the 'someone has posted a reply' message coming up -which I haven't seen for a while thinking about it?

Assuming the bird could be kept still long enough I suppose if you put something between the tongue and the beak before applying the glue it may be possible. Probably a bit risky though! Maybe a vet could do it though.

I'd suggest there's no need to do anything if the bleeding has stopped. It might be a bit sore for a few days but should heal wih no problems and he will survive as birds that have been de-beaked survive. The beak may not grow back but he'll adjust quite quickly.
