Hi Everyone
Hope you can help.2 of my chicks have blocked wents from inside, try to poo and nothing comming out.all area is very swollen and hard to tuch. They stop eating now as they crops empty all the time now.Does anybody have an idea how to help them? They 5 days old and been eating boiled egg yolk and chick crumbs.

Keeping the vents clean and washed in warm water always helps. Are you giving your babies grit? They have to have it to help them digest. You can buy bird grit, or use a container of natural uncomposted garden soil. They love scratching around in soil, and they will eat the grit they find there. Also a few fresh cuts with shears from the lawn (never use mowings) helps to keep them healthy. AS to the two worse affected babies, I wouldn't like to prescribe. Hopefully someone will advise you.

I keep them on the sand and have grit too.I think they swollowed to much of it and causing now problem for them. They also have greens but they not eating theese yet.The went are clean from outside, they blocked from inside :C

Hi, sorry to hear about your problem. You mention they are on sand which like you said could be the problem. Because they are on chick crumbs they really don't need much grit at all as chick crumbs are very easily digested. My first chicks never got grit until they joined my big hens and started eating grains (which is where they really need the grit). The only thing I can suggest is getting some olive oil into them to help unblock it. Also put some oil around the vent even inside if you think you can do it without damaging the chick. I used a cotton bud once to try and push a chicks prolaspe back in, the cotton bud fits in the vent and doesn't damage it. So you could try soaking the cotton bud in oil and gently putting inside the vent, but not too far just the very tip, only if you think you can it is a very delicate procedure. My chicks prolaspe never got better but it's still healthy and running around now 9 weeks old. I know it's used for chickens which are egg bound. I would remove the grit too. As long as they are on chick crumbs and greens they won't need it. If your worried you can give a little once a wek or so as it is stored in the stomach for some time. Other than that I don't know what to suggest. I'm afraid if the oil doesn't work and they are in a lot of pain you may have to make a tough decision. Sorry I know it's not nice but I hate to think one of my chooks is suffering. I really wish you the best of luck and hope they get better. Hope someone else may have some ideas.

Hi thanks for advise I had try with oil already yesterday and very small improvment.I had given them warm bath and hoping this will help them.tomorow I try to give them a drop of lactulose liquid for softening the poo,so maybe this will help them eventually pass all this stuf. They try so hard.

Stop the egg yolk, check the age of the chick crumbs. Make sure they are warm enough and have plenty of water available. Check the bedding in case they are eating it, you may need to change to old towels for a couple of days.

Thanks Foxy
Chick crumbs OK,will change the bedding, one of them is improving allready after having a drop of lactose,at least produced fine looking poo.The area still bit swollen and hard but hoping for imrovment soon :)

Also make sure the are warm enough & not in any draughts as a chill can cause this too :-)17

Hope they are better now.

Oh great Tygrisek. But do try to get the naughty children to eat their greens in future!

Allready started eat chick weed :-)08 .Blocked bottoms definetly were from sand as after changing bedding still sand was comming out.I had kept chick on sand before without any problems, but this lot was so greedy with food and absolutry trashed with sand,so there you go :-)08 I read somwere thet wood shawings are so bad for them if they eat that's why I had choose sand as reflecting also heat and keep them very warm :D
