Hi there
I recently acquired two ex batt girls and notice that the lower part of the beak on one is longer than the upper. I have read that you can trim the beak but am nervous about doing this in case I hurt her. I do have claw clippers as well as scissors but don't know if these are safe to use. Any advice would be most gratefully received! My vet knows even less about chickens than I do so I can't ask her for help... :?

Hi Caroline,

Yes, just like nails, the beak can be trimmed. You do need to watch out for the quick, take a small amount off at a time.

Dog nail clippers are usually the best thing to use. Although when trimmed it will be 'square' on the end, it will round off as the chook uses it.

Have moved this from the FAQ section - it did not appear at first as that needs moderator approval in case you were wondering where your post was.

Exactly as tim advised. Trimming beaks is not a thing to worry about and is straight forward, trim small amounts at a time.
