Today we lost the last of our bantams, Floss. She seemed absolutely fine this morning when I let them out, and has been eating and laying well and had a full crop when I checked last night. I came home at midday and she was dead on the ground outside. She was only about a year old.
She is the third hen we've lost now in less than 3 years.
1. Phantom (pekin bantam)- Sept 2011 suddenly lost weight, lethargic, very pale, noisy breathing. Put to sleep - vet said chronic lung obstruction
2. Bella (favorelle) - Nov 2011 found suddenly lost weight, lethargic, pale, liquid diarrheoa. Given antibiotics and nursed back to health.
3. Flo (pekin bantam) - March 2012 lethargic, pale, stopped eating but crop full, liquid diarrheoa. Put to sleep. Vet did post mortem and found impacted crop but suspected underlying infection to be primary cause.
They have been reguarly wormed with Flubenvet and vet said there were no signs of worm damage when she did PM on Flo and all her organs were fine.
We've now got just Bella left and two brown warrens, Clover and Sage. All 3 deaths seem to have been slightly different. Do you think we've just been unlucky?
