hi my name is cara and could use some advise on my pair of aylesbury ducks.the drake is a beautiful healthy bird but the duck very overweight and bad on her legs...she seems to be in constant pain, although she is laying every day.my thinking is that i should bring in two more ducks and eventually put her out of her pain when the drake has become used to the company of the newcomers.they are both about 16 months old.also if i do this is she too old for the table?? i am really tormented on what's the right thing to do.

Hi Cara, i have moved your topic to this forum :) When you say you have aylesbury ducks- are they the tradional pure breed? or a commercial hybrid? If pure they are very big birds and can have problems with their legs- they can also suffer from arthritis - can you see any swelling/cuts on her legs/feet? Have you wormed them at all? I would add some more ducks and see how your original duck goes along- she may need a trip to the vet for a check up - just to make sure all is ok. She will be tough to eat even at that age.
regards, David :)

hi david.thanks for your reply.we bought them as purebred but with no previous knowledge of ducks who knows for sure :? they are very big and i would say the drake is definitely true.the ducks beak has gone very pale over time and she does'nt have the clean, proud look of her mate.i have never wormed them...i will now!!!she has a callous on one of her feet, but it is hard and does'nt seem to hurt to touch, her legs are swollen looking and as you mentioned i have been thinking arthritic..its like the weight is to much to carry.that and the fact that the drake is being a bit demanding of her right now  so maybe two more ladies will give her a break and the rest will do her good..

Davidd suggested worming, I just wanted to mention that Ducks will often go off their feet / go lame when they have worms.... I would definately worm them first.

If they are commercial strains, they can get so big they have difficulty walking as they will normally be for the table of course.

Can you post a picture of them??

Tim

Hello, they are not pure bred aylesbury- they look like cross breeds or utility birds- the duck doesn't look overweight so i would worm them and try and get a couple of more ducks to lessen the attention of the drake- she should improve then , hopefully :D
regards, David :)

Thank you guys :D .i will follow your advice and will let ye know how she gets on.The hunt is on for two more ducks, would khaki campells or silver appleyards ( 2 breeds i know can get in this area) be okay to put with them.or should i stick to the same breed....whatever that is  Thanks again....cara

Thanks david. leaning towards the appleyard (i like the look of them) :) but we'l wait and see.....cara
