The option I use if you have it Chris is 'View Actual Pixels' which will show it at the size it will display at on the site. I would have thought this would have been the same as your 'full size' option by the sound of things though. 'Full screen' is basically a zoom to fit the screen and will look terribly pixilated for small images as you say...
If in doubt, I go to the file in Windows explorer, right click and look at the propoerties. This will tell you the pixel size (eg 90 x 90) and the file size (e.g. 4Kb)
