Forgot to mention when I filed the photo with a new name having worked on it I had set the image to 'full screen', because at 'full size' it was a tiny hardly visible square in the middle of a blank page. I assumed that the forum software could squeeze it down to the available avatar frame but not pick it out and blow it up, which is a more complex process. Of course it looked really grainy at screen size as you could see every pixel.

The option I use if you have it Chris is 'View Actual Pixels' which will show it at the size it will display at on the site. I would have thought this would have been the same as your 'full size' option by the sound of things though. 'Full screen' is basically a zoom to fit the screen and will look terribly pixilated for small images as you say...

If in doubt, I go to the file in Windows explorer, right click and look at the propoerties. This will tell you the pixel size (eg 90 x 90) and the file size (e.g. 4Kb)

Tim, any suggestions for Mac users? I don't have windows explorer on here.

There must be less frustrating ways to spend a Saturday evening!!!!!!!!

Well done Chris! How did you do that? I've managed to make mine bigger, but now the quality is rubbish!

If you took the small image Sue and increased the physical screen size (in pixels), it will look bad as it will be stretching the few pixels you have to fit the new size.

If you start with the higher resolution image (large physical size) and reduce it, that will work. Basically it throws information away when you reduce the image, reducing the file size and physical image size and you can't get that back if you then increase the physical size again...

Hope this helps!

Thanks Tim, I've just thrown my husband of the windows laptop so I can try to do it on there!!!!!

Could you try:

iphoto → Open → photos or external device → select file
Double click
Tools
Adjust size (should allow you to pick the number of pixels etc)

I've done it, I've done it, I've done it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But was it worth it!?!?!

Well done Sue, its not a sailing ship at all, its a really cute chicken !!

Guess Tim will have to do an Avatar FAQ's section now as everyone is going to want one.

Yes, Sue it's LOVELY!!!
What a fantastic picture!
I've just got back to this, whilst you've all been spending the evening on it, and of course it puts the avatar on all your old posts as well, so I knew on Page 1 you were going to do it but didn't know how, it was quite exciting reading all through your progress to success!
Not a ship in full sail at all, then.
And I love yours too, Chris, a very good likeness I'm sure.

I'm glad you like it! Thank you for the congratulations!

It's my favourite hen, Buttercup, my Buff Sussex (not the one with the wing problem). Buttercup is the one who Potty Dotty was bullying when they first arrived.

I think I'm going to have nightmares tonight!!!!

By the way, I used Pixresizer on the windows laptop, so thank you Foxy for that tip. It was easy to use as well.

Hee, that's Mehefin...the acquitted feather pecker. Pre-laying so no comb on the pic but in real life it's getting bigger and redder!

It wasn't too difficult - fiddly for sure! But, I work with computers everyday!

I'd just say that if people have a picture they like then maybe:

  • Make a copy of it
Right click to check the properties and see the size
Open the copy in Paint (if you use windows)
Resize it to about half probably
Save the picture as a GIF file - this then reduces the bytes even further but can reduce quality
Keep fiddling about with it to get to a good size - less than 6kb and 90x90 pixel, as dictated

It's hard to explain really! And I might not have done it in the most simple way either - just my way! :-)17
