Hi All
I have got 29 gorgeous ladies.... and have never seen any foxes in the area... although somebody told me they spotted a fox not too far away so am now looking at protecting my girls... I was looking at an automatic door that closes in dusk and opens in day light is this the best thing to get? If so any ideas where to get it and is it easy to fit. Thanks alot everyone

I have 3 auto closers and they are fantastic. I would highly recommend.

If you have a look at this link it gives you some more info and photos in a review I wrote:

Also, if you follow the Wells Poultry Banner at the bottom of this page, you can see prices / parts. They are usually pretty good on price.

I have 5 of them...all from Wells poultry, excellent service specially if you need advice how to set them up :-)17

Very useful as we want to get one for our large house (fed up of scaring the neighbours going up the garden with my pink fluffy dressing gown on  ) Are they very reliable?

very reliable, the trick is the get the right door on there in the first place, and add a bit of vaseline to the runners ( door runners not ducks... :D ) to stop the door freezing in the winter ;)

It's worth paying the extra for a timer for the door opener too- My whole flock of pekins were killed by a fox last spring when the door opener opened at about 5am :(

are you hens totally free range? or are they in a large run? if mr fox is able to get right up to the hen house i would say maybe not such a good idea! plenty of foxes still around at 6 in the morning or whatever time the hatch will open.

Very good point!...auto door openers do what they say on the tin...however...a fox will be around night and day, whether an urban or rural fox so would not rely on them to protect chooks.

i have one and wouldnt be without it!

easy to fit and comes with a two year guarentee. my one was from flytesofancy. price has gone up alot since i bought ours. the are fab though!

We have a automatic pop hole opener combined with a time clock. Absolutely fantastic. :-)08 Best piece of kit we have bought since we got the chooks 3 years ago. Although the timer is quite a bit more on the price it does give you total control.
Chooks are in a covered run on the allotment. The timer lets them out into the run at 6.45am and is timed to close at the moment at 6.30pm. This gives them enough time to get in at sunset.
We also have foxes and there was one sniffing around this morning at about 8.30 when I went down to check them as I do every morning. He made off when he saw me. The 6 chooks were making a right racket and were all on the coop roof. We have to be vigilant when we let them out on the plot during the day but the auto pop hole gives us extra security at night.

We are definitely going to get one. The hens will be let out into a large covered run so no problem with Mr Fox. I then let them free range in the garden later when it is more safe to do so. :)
