What can I expect at a waterfowl auction :?: I am concidering going[without any money so I can't be tempted ;) ] to see how it works & view other breeds that interest me. It's held monthly, so I may go again to purchace later, depending on the advice of the forum.

Hi, as long as you know what your looking for then auctions can be good. Just try not to buy on impulse and if you do, you need to quarantine the birds. Sometimes there can be sick/old/ poor specimens so you need to be careful of those. Quality always sells so you will find the best birds make the best prices. Try to take some one with you who has experience and most of all - have fun and don't spend all your money!
regards, David :)

Hi David, dose it count if I spend my husband's money instead :?:

You're not far from Salisbury, the rare breed auction is on this Saturday, something like 1,600 lots and a far few ducks and geese too! ;)

If I was nearer Id be going as some chooks on my wishlist :D
Just be careful, dont buy on impulse & get there early to check over anything you may be interested in. Look out for poorly birds etc (dont buy even if they are what you really want) & isolate for 2 weeks after purchase - I say this from bad experience as have bought in birds & have been ill/died within this time scale. Luckily, as I do isolate none of the birds I already had caught any nasties.
Wishing you all the best & if you do buy would love to see pics! :D

You can get an online catalogue at www.salisburyauctioncentre.co.uk about 1800 pens inc. hatching eggs. It's a good place to see lots of birds and arrange to meet people/breeders. But if you want the best & advice & back up help go directly to the breeder, they also don't go through the stress or contact with lots of other birds, they can also be cheaper, as at auctions people can get carried away.....
