I don't know if the link above will work or not, but I would appreciate it if someone could have a look. My bantam had had some sort of throat infection for over a week now, I've removed her from the rest with normal feed and Tylan in her water. The closest I have come in identifying what is wrong is Mycoplasma, but she doesn't have foamy eyes it just that she is breathing through her mouth and is trying to 'crow' and makes no noise (she made a LOT of noise at the beggining of the infection, it's as if she has lost her voice)

This morning it looks like she has strained so much there is something red sticking out of her vent, should I try to push this back in. It is not very clear but it can be seen at the end of the video.

If you type the following into You Tube: 8th June 2011 026

Thank you in advance

Better link for you.

Sneezing is classic respiratory problem, but it looks like its "irritated" as well. It could be a simple sinus problem/infection that will take a while to clear.

Maybe Tylan injectable might be worth a try from your vet. Also make sure the area is not too dusty it looks like you have a covered run of sorts? She might be better off outside in an open run for a bit.

Apple Cider vinegar in the water.. 50ml to a litre for the time being. As Reb suggests have a quick look down her throat for any evidence of Gape Worm, Have they been wormed lately? Might be worth a course of Flubenvet to be on the safe side anyway.

Anything protruding is likely to be a prolapse, didn't spot it in the video though. This is probably due to a slight calcium deficency, poss because she has been under the weather...is she laying normal eggs?
Make sure her diet is balanced, no treats or corn keep them on layers plus a oyster shell for the time being. If you have fresh dandelions growing feed those they are a good source of calcium.
If it is only a slight protrusion it should be OK, pop it back in with a dab of prep H (heamorrhoid cream) give her bottom a quick wash first though.

Thank you both for your quick replies/suggestions & thanks also Foxy for getting the link to work.

I've started a weeks course of Flubenvet this morning as gape worm does make sense, the last time she was wormed was 7 months ago, the other two are quite new due to a fox attack killing three chickens 6weeks ago, so it won't hurt for them to have a course as well. They have access all day to the covered run and a large uncovered pen, due to the hot weather/no rain the outside could get pretty dusty. Thay have garlic in their water at the moment, but I will change this to ACV later today, is this to thin the mucus? Also how long should I use the ACV for?

She was not at her best before this as she had been broody and was very stubourn about my efforts to break that, so she hasn't layed for about five weeks now.

Right on with the rubber glove to sort her vent out.

Hi you can keep the garlic in the water, won't do any harm at all. The slighter higher dose of ACV you're right may help reduce mucous.

Chooks don't have efficent respiratory systems compared to humans, so are particulary sensitive to dust. I would when cleaning the house use poultry shield (or similar) and no powders in the house, if you use diatom mix into a paste and use very sparingly in the nooks and crannies. Replace (if you can) bedding with a low dust one suitable for horses, easibed is a good one.

If she has been a bit run down specially as she has been broody for a while, you could add a bit of poulty spice in their feed mixed well with a tblsp of cod liver oil.

Her vent is now nice and clean, thats the first prolpse I've had to deal with and it was all quite easy, just a bit embarasing buying the Prep H.

Poultry spice, poultry sheild on order from Wells, I'll look into the bedding.

Just a case of keeping a close eye on her now.

Thanks again.

Is Tylan a wormer? If she has trouble both at the top and at the bottom, I sort of imagine a blockage in the middle? I would take her off any medication that isn't working and try something else. Can chickens perhaps be allergic to some medictaions in the same way that we are?

I have fixed your Youtube video slowfood and embedded it in your post (youtube button on right when posting and then posted the link that Foxy gave in between).

Tylan is a broad spectrum antibiotic Animartco

I hope she makes a good recovery. Gapeworm is often confused with respiritory problems. Usually picked up from ground that has had wild Pheasants on it as they seem to carry it a lot.
