I know I must have too much time on my hands to make a post like this but one of the first things that struck me when we arrived was how differently they package butter, it is very nice, a bit more taste to it than the standard butters in the UK, though nothing like some of the stuff you get in the alps where you can virtually taste the grass in it, interesting way of doing it I thought. It is starting to heat up here now at 30C at the moment and forecast for the foreseeable future, apparently it's not unusual for it to be 40C in July and August so I am glad we got the electric blinds on the apartment fixed even if it did mean dehousing an unfortunate pair of nesting swifts, they had part incubated their eggs which was a bit of a shame.

That's very attractive Dinosaw -seems a shame to cut into it. Nothing like that here. Butter is packaged same as the UK but seems to taste better, even the cheapest stuff, which could be down to the environment rather than the actual product.

Pity about the swallows, but once your house gets hot it is very expensive to cool it down. Air conditioners here are very cheap so that's a common problem in modern dry houses.

We have Hoopoe nesting in the wall. Only one chick left now but it's nearly ready to fledge. Parents were trying to encourage it out yesterday.

Yes it would lose it's shape very quickly Marigold, I did a lot of baking back home and waiting for butter to soften was always a pet hate of mine as I used to forget to take it out of the fridge overnight, here I can get it out 30 minutes beforehand.

I must admit I had to look up Hoopoe on google Chris, beautiful birds aren't they, your lucky to be hosting one. One has overshot it's migration and ended up in the Scottish borders.

I would agree that French butter almost always tastes better than British.

My wife Rosie has the film I took yesterday of a Hoopoe chick at the entrance to the nest. Turns out there are two of them- one is a few days development behind its greedy sibling. Will put it on YouTube and will post the link later. Yes, the one in Scotland is a away off course and will need to fly an extra 1000 miles or so to get back.
