I'm wrecked. At 4am a raccoon broke into the coop and killed two of our five hens.
One of our tortoises has been interested in the coop lately and I think he made enough of a hole in the chicken wire that the raccoon got in.
I guess I have to let the dog sleep out back for a couple weeks now until things quiet down. I'm so bummed. They were named Orange and Goldie and they were 4.5 yrs old. RIP

Hi Josh.
I'm really sorry. It's heart-breaking, isn't it? Non-chicken keepers don't understand how your hens leave claw prints on your heart 😢. I hope you have some good memories to hold onto.

sorry to here this! do you have a lot of problems with predators? we haven't had any issues yet. knock on wood. id be so sad to lose one of my girls

Thanks Igor. We really don't have too many issues with predators but every once in a while they do come around. I would say once a year or less. There are rats outside but they don't seem to ever bother the hens.
We did have a hawk get a chick once that was very unfortunate. But really the biggest issue here in our area is raccoons. People on the outskirts of town probably have to deal with coyotes and foxes too but not in the more populated areas.
