    What to do - lice?

Oregano has got to be far better for them than nicotine!!! Clever chooks 😄

    Sprays to eradicate red mite

I bought my first coop second hand and it was riddled with red mite. I used an entire spray bottle of "Total Mite Kill", a pink opaque spray, on every surface & then left it to air for a couple of weeks before I collected my first flock of ex-batts. We didn't have any problem with red mite.

    So what do quail eat?

I avoid using any herbicides or pesticides in the garden, because I never know what the girls will get their beaks into...

    What to do - lice?

Surely a spray of 30% nicotine would kill the chickens, never mind the lice??? I suggest putting an FFP3 mask or respirator on yourself & dusting each hen with diatomaceous earth powder. Puff it under each wing, around the vent and under the hackle feathers. You can also make up a slurry of...

    Greetings poultry keepers

I think Josh has had to clamp down on the joining process because we've had a flurry of people/ bots signing up lately with nefarious intent. I missed a lot of them as I was away on holiday but I did see a few emails from a new member with an interest in the wrong kind of birds- call girls in...

    Greetings poultry keepers

Me neither. I loathe Facebook. On here you can choose what to read & you don't get shown some things 5 times & other stuff not at all. I'm from East Kent by the way, not far from Canterbury. Welcome 😃

    Has the forum invasion finished?

Thanks Josh. Happily I was on holiday dealing with an invasion of horseflies instead. I've come home to find that my Cream Legbar hybrid has gone broody. What were the chances of that???

    Hello from Birmingham, UK!

Oh, and provided that your coop is in a fox-proof run, there's no harm in having an automatic pop-hole opener to let them out into the run in the mornings. It'll only take a few evenings of training before they learn to put themselves to bed before the door closes again.

    Hello from Birmingham, UK!

Hi Marius. If your flock are to free range, you or another responsible person need to be there while they're out, to defend them from predators. When I first started researching, as you're wisely doing, I mentioned on this forum that I planned to adopt some ex-battery hens. The last thing that I...

Best way to introduce new chicks to the flock

You did the right thing in adding a greater number of new birds to a smaller number of established birds. E.g. adding three newbies to two existing hens would be much better than adding two new birds to an established flock of three.

Do you use porcelain fake eggs ?

I use them to encourage my girls to lat their eggs in the nestboxes rather than in the coop. I've lost a couple too- both when other people have been looking after the girls when I've been on holiday. I suspect that they had a tough time making their breakfasts!! I resorted to writing on the...
