Sorry to report that, despite being a pure breed of Spanish descent, Sue passed away during the UK's heatwave on Saturday evening. 😪 . She was under two years of age. I don't know whether inbreeding might have played a part, as she's such a rare breed?

    Has the forum invasion finished?

Hi Chris. I've been delighted this evening to find that the Poultrykeeper forum seems to be back online! How are your flock coping with the heatwave? I'm sad to report that my Pita Pinta Asturiana didn't make it, despite being a Mediterranean breed 😪

    Hello!

Hi Nestnerd. You're wise to join a forum to learn before getting your first flock. Chris is a font of useful knowledge. I'd also strongly recommend a search through the older posts on here as most of your questions will have been asked & answered a fair few times before. I started using the...

    Raven attack

It'll sound nuts, but when my girls are alarmed I sing Frankie Goes To Hollywood's"The Power of Love" to them. I've no idea why, but it calms then right down in a way that nothing else does!!! It was a chance discovery years ago, but it's amazingly effective. I guess a good singing voice helps...

    Raven attack

Hi Chris. Sorry to hear that your flocks have been under attack again 😢. I guess your runs are too large to roof over with chicken wire?

I let my girls have a natural break over the winter rather than providing artificial light. It's healthier for them.

Topic Of The Week: What Are You Giving Table Scraps at Thanksgiving?

In the UK it's illegal to feed table scraps to poultry. My girls will get layers' pellets & a handful of sunflower seeds. If their luck's in, I might hang up the leaves from a cauliflower for them.

What is your favorite breed of poultry ?

My favourites are usually whoever enjoy cuddles the most & lay well. Not at all scientific! At present it's my Pita Pinta Asturiana, called Sue.

    My new "posh birds"

I still do that now, after all these years. I can see if somethings ailing any of the girls before they show symptoms, if their eggs get consistently smaller or less frequent. And they can have extra treats when they make a milestone, e.g. their 300th egg 😃

Topic Of The Week:Keeping Chickens Entertained in Winter

I hang up a cauliflower crown in the run. When you cut the white part of the cauliflower out leaving the stem & leaves in one piece, you can push a crochet hook through the stem. Use this to pull some string through, then tie up the cauliflower in the run. Keep the loop in the string as small as...
