Hi everyone, new here! Planning to start keeping chickens and excited to learn from you all!

Hello @NestNerd and welcome to the forum. Seems simple when you start, but is actually quite complicated. The key is to avoid mistakes and then you won't have to deal with the problems they would cause.

Perhaps the only book you will need on the subject is 'Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens' written by Gail Damerow. ISBN 978-1-60342-469-1. It is an American publication and my copy is marked at $19.95, so I expect there will be taxes and shipping/postage on top of that. Be aware that there are other poultry books that contain some very bad advice, so just because it is in writing doesn't make it correct.

Hi Nestnerd.
You're wise to join a forum to learn before getting your first flock. Chris is a font of useful knowledge. I'd also strongly recommend a search through the older posts on here as most of your questions will have been asked & answered a fair few times before.

I started using the forum in 2012 or 2013 & there's lots of helpful advice from back then on building runs, making them rat-proof, how much space you need per bird, why just having a coop without a run is a terrible idea, etc. etc.

One of my favourites is a thread along the lines of "is this poo normal??" with lots of pictures. (Spoiler alert: unless it's vivid green then it's probably fine!)
