i cant get my head around culling my girls cause they are egg eating so i am going to try one more thing then if this doesnt work i'll have to toughen up , my dad made these ages ago for the apples to sit in but they have never been used so i thought i would try them as homemade rollaway nesting areas    they have a choice of holes and they are lifted up high enough for the girls not to reach the eggs also they take up most the house space so they shouldnt lay anywhere else as there is no where :-)05 bit like chicken snooker really :-)04 :-)04 what do you reckon will it work :-)17

Maybe... Do the eggs fall through, or roll away? If they fall through, two problems come to mind:

1. Will the chickens be able to reach through the holes and eat the eggs?
2. Is there something soft enough to keep the eggs from cracking when they fall down?

I would say Karlooben that it will confuse the hell out of them and perhaps they will forget egg eating? Chicken snookered perhaps?

They just lay flat so I am hoping the girls will knock the eggs into any hole and there'a plenty soft paper bedding underneath so they should not break an no they can't reach them but this is just temp until we make something a lot better It looks so stupid it will probably work  I will report back tomorrow mud afternoon .

I went home at 10 am an no eggs then why do days drag when your waiting for something .

Interesting idea :) even if the eggs don't drop straight down, the chicken trying to eat it should knock it down.

a hidden rollaway system would be my preference but interested to see how this idea works.

Ahhhhhhh not 1 single egg today so can't say if it worked or not  will try it for a week :) I've brought home better bedding that's softer for the eggs to land on Will keep you updated :D forgot to add i have seen this kinda thing at a freinds place many years ago , he had small boxes laided up against one walll quite high up and they had a hole cut in the middle so as soon as they egg was laided it dropped right out down into another box where the birds could not get to them it worked really well for him so this idea kinda works on the same princple just my girls need to get used to it i have heightened them slighty as well but the whole lot is removable so i might take them out each night and just put them back in the mornings or do i leave them in there so they get used to them as i know chickens hate change .
also with the brought rollaways i have left them in the run but covered the entrances with black membrane so who knows they may use them as well but its going to be really interesting to see if these work or not .

Back to my last post Karlooben. It's confused the hell out of them and they have stopped laying. That's great, as the egg eaters are now snookered.

well i suppose thats a good thing maybe they will stop long enough for them to forget about it :-)05 but i wont hold my breath  i reckon this will work its just a case of them getting used to it as it only takes one to lay an egg and the rest should follow i mean really its no more diferent then a large roll away nesting system just theres more holes and the great thing is the gaps between each hole is plenty wide enough for the girls to walk on without worring of falling down a hole { i hope } .
anyways they cant play snooker only got 2 colours of egg so be bit of a boring game :-)12

Once an egg starts down their systems they can't stop it, can they, although I suppose if they get a bad shock that would perhaps stop the next egg or two after that from being laid. What I mean is, when they feel the need to lay their next eggs in your new box, they won't realise its any different until they get in there, and then it will be too late to stop it coming. So maybe today was just one of those days when nobody felt like obliging you with an egg, and tomorrow is when they will get the BIG SURPRISE!

depending how busy we are at work i'll try and pop back at 10 am and see whats happening if these dont work after a few weeks then i'll have to go back to the old boxes and get some dummy eggs and try them well thats until we can build wooden rollaway boxes at are easy to pull out an clean i know the sort of thing i want but i havent got any wood laying around thats suitable at the mo.

did they work umm nope well not today anyway , there was about 7 inch gap to the front of the house and the girls laided there , i had 3 smashed eggs and 2 whole ones which i managed to save then later in the day i found another one but guess what i broke it removing the trays to replace with the royal mail boxes which the girls just adore laying in but with help of my decorater i managed to get the back half of these boxes out so the eggs roll down and away but for now i have had to fix them on a temp basis until i can get someone to help me cut into the back of the house to form a drop away system :D :D and they may not happen tell the weekend i am not going to give up on this i'm going to try everything i can :-)17

Sounds as though you are evolving a pretty good system Karlooben. I am very interested to see what you finally end up with that works for you.

was hoping to see my friend last night but he never went over the site so i'll probably catch him this afternoon , i know what needs to be done now its just getting the help to do is correctly and also this house i have now is made from proper nearly an inch thick marine ply and cutting it to make a gap big enough at the bottom maybe tricky { its an old shelfing unit from work converted it'll never rot } i wont give up  i miss having my cheese flans and muffins .

guess what it kinda worked found 1 egg underneath :-)17 only prob though if i fit 4 of these things it competley covers the floor so they have no choice but to lay on them and this morning i only left 3 in there and one of the whites had worked out how to move this single one along as it had moved a good few inches and wasnt siting flush agasint the wall of the house and got to 2 eggs but also i need to make them higher as well 4 inches isnt ennough height so i was thinking of maybe 6 inches but only thing is chickens can stretch thier necks a pretty long way so i dont know if thats enough until i try it over the weekend .
