Wyandotte still broody after 8 weeks !!

Hi Sue.
I'm afraid I don't put anything in the nest boxes as my other girls are using them. Having said they they are both regular as clockwork and are both done by 11am. I then remove the eggs, turn Winnie out and shut the coop till bedtime. She goes garrity but at least she eats, drinks, baths etc. She then watches my every move and runs up and down the garden waiting to get back in.She clucks and squawks and even attacks my german shepherd if he even looks at her!!!
When I go up to lift the hatch she actually jumps on my shoulder to get in
She is totally in the zone and I will be giving her eggs next time .She's a crazy girl but I love her spirit!! :D

Bev, I only block the nest boxes overnight, not during the day, so the other bird can use them.

When I said earlier that I saw no harm in letting them sit, I reaaly had in mind a period of 3-6 weeks. In my opinion, three months is far to long. It's not much of a life sitting for that amount of time with half hearted attempts to break her. Very frustrating for her with nothing at the end of it and very little approaching a normal life for all that time.

Update on the mad broody . She's still going! :-)06
Despite all the advice (which I have tried) she is determined to carry on.I turf her off as soon as the others are done laying and close up but she just sits next to the coop waiting to get back in. I have put pots in the nest boxes at night but she then justs finds a comfy spot and sits there.
Despite the agg she does eat , scratch and bathe and actually seems quite healthy and happy. :-)07
She is so aggressive though that my German Shepherd won't go in the garden when she is out. She even attacks the wild birds!!
We are now thirteen weeks in and its all getting a bit tedious. :-)10

You will have to be more strict with her if you want to get her out of it. These links may be interesting;

Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

Have you tried Tygresek's idea of taking her to a friends garden and letting her out there for a good while. The disorientation of that seems to help a lot in the breaking process. We tried with Ollie. Although not apparently immediate acting, she snapped out broodiness of it two days later.

Stop messing, put her in a cage, something like a dog crate. She will be off broody within a week.

Quick update. Winnie went into a dog crate for three days and nights which nearly killed her. She wouldn't eat or drink. On day four I had to remove her and put her back with the others.
She is on the mend and we are back in the old routine, which is chucking her off for several hours a day. It's coming up for four months now and I really don't know what else to do. She attacks anything and everything, including me!! :-)07
Life is further complicated by the fact that I have seven, three week old chicks. She knows they are there, although they are all seperated, and this seems to be making her worse. HELP !!!!

Hi bevdrury, You obviously have now beaten my record for a broody hen!!!!! You must be tearing your hair out by now!

Could you give her some eggs to hatch? If she's eating and drinking as I assume she must be as she wouldn't be with us any longer, she may hatch and raise the chicks and then stop being broody. Just an idea!

If she's otherwise healthy, maybe you should just leave her to get on with it, but only if this isn't going to make her ill.

My Potty Dotty (Wyandotte) has been broody twice in the last 8 weeks, but at least she had a weeks break in the middle!!!!

I have two very similar broodies they get put in the dog cage every day, I can't leave them in the cage at night as I am too worried about predators. The bottom of the dog cage is out so they are on the rungs on the bare ground and they still sit down and moan and groan. As soon as I open the door to let them go to bed they rush past me like mad things to the nest box where they then snuggle down on absolutely nothing. I managed to break two others with this method but these two are not for turning. Like you I'm at a loss.

Hi Val. The nest boxes should be blocked off at night. So they have to go on the floor. I've taken the softer approach and bring them in at night and it's worked, although a bit slower than usual but all 7 have broken. 3 days maximum is now 3-14 days, with the 14 day one disorientated by an afternoon in the house at day 12.

Finally, after 142 days Winnie has given up and left the nest box! :-)08
I now have four healthy happy hens plus the two chicks who have integrated totally with hens. Life has returned to normal at last. :D

Congratulations bevdrury! Surely that must be a record? My Wyandotte is broody again, this is the 4th week. She seems to have a break of 2 weeks before going broody again!! I start thinking everything is back to normal and there she goes again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Wyandotte is showing signs that she's getting broody again. Is it possible to buy day old chicks and skip the sitting stage? The reason I ask is that her sister has hatched 4 legbars last week but only one is a hen I would have liked a few more.

Never tried it myself Dobby but it has been done successfully. Problem is the hen can reject them and then you are stuck.

On the subject of broody I knew TNN's were famous for it but poor Claude the cockerel is getting rather bored on his own at the moment. All three hens are now on the floor of the coop in a little huddle growling at me and fluffing up the few feathers they have. The two sisters Florence and Elisa have been in for two weeks, have got rather pale being in darkness for so long and got sunburned yesterday when I put them out!

You can buy d/o chicks and put under her after she has been sitting for at least a week. Slip the chicks under her at night and most are fine with this.
Don't attempt it with chicks over a day old as the chances of her accepting them would not be good.

Thanks for the replies, today has confirmed that she is definately broody again. I would like to try and pop some day olds under her but not sure if I like the risk. Ive been given a small dog crate and tomorrow she's in for a bit of alone time.
