wrongly set incubator

Thank you for your kind message Marigold. I was putting her back with the other chicks when she was warm and had eaten something, but she wasn't thriving and quality of life became poor. I didn't have the courage to dispatch her myself so she was gassed and put to sleep by the vet.

I can see your other suggestion re dividing the chicks is sensible. However, I presume the chicks have been well-exposed to what she has, and it wouldn't give the mother a complete rest and scope to medicate her without worrying if the chicks might get the medication. I will try separating her but if she becomes too anxious I will put her back with them.

Hi
I to think i have made this mistake i am on day 20, can someone tell me what the correct temp is please. I got told 37.7 then drop to 37.5 have i got this right if not am i to late as i have nothing. This is my first time at this so all advice welcome even if nothing hatches i will be trying again, so am willing to hear from people who know alot more about this than me. I am just a novice.

Hi Jan and welcome to the forum. The day counting starts at Zero when the incubator is at 37.5 and humidity 50%. At day 18 temperature goes down to 37.0 and the humidity goes up to 75%.

In the latter stage it's the humidity that is very important. How that is achieved depends on your incubator. But you should drop your temperature to 37.0 immediately if you are on day 20. Good luck.

Thank you for the right information, i think i am now on day 21 and i was told 37.7 and then drop to 37.5. Since i now have the right temperatures i have re set the incubator. However i fear that this hatch is lost due to me having the wrong information. Thanks ever so much for putting me right. and thanks for having me on this forum.

You won't have lost the hatch for such a small temperature difference Jan. The instruction sheets we have for one of our Spanish or Italian incubators says 37.7. If it is down to 37.0 now and the humidity has been raised I can't see a problem. Did you candle them at any stage?

Worth getting a copy of Katie Thear's book 'Incubation -A guide to hatching and rearing' ISBN 0-9061-3725-X.

I have also read that it is better not to raise the humidity until the first eggs have pipped, as lower humidity makes the pipping easier.

It's always best to raise the humidity at day 18 or 19 chickenfan, too dry and the membrane becomes tough to break through. Most incubators without a humidity pump lose humidity when adding more water so you have a lag time between when you try to raise humidity and when it actually gets to where you want it, if you wait till the eggs pip then humidity falls just when you don't want it to and there is a good chance that your chicks will be trying to force their way through dry membrane.

Hi
I would just like to thank everyone for their advice. It was day 25 and still no further on so i checked the eggs and it looks like they died. I could see something dark inside the eggs but it was not moving. So i made the decision to switch the incubator off.
It was only a very small incubator, the eggs i got off ebay 2 were not fertile as i could see. So i have also switched off the brooder. Thanks everyone i think i will borrow my brother's should he have a successful hatch with his goose eggs.
