Would you like to have a guess in sexing 7 weeks old chicks?

Hello there,

just wondering - any of you experienced enough in sexing chickens? We have six of them and I tried to have a guess but not experienced enough to bet on my guess

They are all 7 weeks old mixed breed although I can tell you that the father is white sussex (nice big cockerel) and can advice you on who their mothers are.

I can upload pictures but just wanted to know first if it is actually possible to sex them so young. We had some friends interested in few of them. Although we can't keep all six of them (if they are by chance all hens) I don't want at the same time to make a promise and then end up giving all hens away and being left with cockerels.

Hard to know with mixed breed chicks. The Sussex breed do not tend to 'show' as soon as some other breeds.

I should put the photos up - always good for a few ooh's and aah's.

you are right, our White Sussex cockerel was believed to be a hen until almost the last couple of weeks when he grew comb and wattles almost overnight...

I will try to take photos and upload later on when there is some help available... Six crazy chicks trying to escape each in different direction is not a material for taking photos

Our broody whose identity is a mystery - we really don't know what breed she is. She is believed to be No1 and No5 Mum. All of them been fathered by White Sussex cockerel.

Just an up-date...

Attila the Hen (pic 6) is definitely a cockerel :-(

He started to crow about two weeks ago and is the only one that is chased around by our main cockerel. The rest of the flock keeps low profile for time being...

Same guess 1, 2, 6 are boys. 6 definately as I can be at this stage. Lots of guides to use but no definites, like who is play chest fighting repeatedly (will become the dominant cockerel), size of poos (hens bigger), who stands tallest/ most upright, who is the most timid (always a hen in my limited experience). We had 46 Wyandottes and Orpingtons which were divided at 10 weeks into hens and cockerels and I was wrong with one -showed as a cockerel at 26 weeks and 2 days and we won't be parted from Basil now -he's lovely.
