we have had quite a bit of rain today and there are puddles again where i havent been able to level the ground and cover it but i was standing there looking at them and wandering wether i put drainpipes in the ground in the middle of where the 3 puddles form an let the water drop down them of course the pipe needs to be slighty lower then the ground and then surely the water would go away quicker :-)05 :-)05 i can get any size drainpipe i want as we have loads laying around and i can also get 18in length by about 1/ 1/2 inch diameter ones from work which plastic foil wrap comes on which we use to wrap pallets with they are very tough personally i think its a great idea :)

Not sure if the chooks would dig it up, but another option would be to dig a trench, fill half of it with gravel or something similar, then put the soil over the top again. It's used as a way of creating drainage in problem areas within gardening circles, as the water should drain into the gravel bed, rather than sit on the surface. Not sure if it would work though?

Trouble is they block up quite quickly with sludge Karminski. They will work for a while though. As BB says the water needs to drain somewhere, like into a gravel bed. Land drain is usually 4" diameter and lasts about 10 years before it blocks up completely.

how deep would the trench need to be ? as i would need 2 one about halfway up the run and one by the main entrance .the allotment site does drain of well after heavy rain but sometimes my puddles can take about 2 days to go away the soil areas that are slighty higher can go dry within 24 hrs after rain .

Do you know if the ground is clay based or sand? It might be that you are compressing the ground with your feet and constant walking in that area so causing the problem? You could try regularly pushing a gardening fork into the ground in the problem spots and 'wiggling' it around to loosen the surface? Temperary solution, but would give you an idea how difficult it would be to drain the area.

umm i dont know actully i think its clay as i remember digging down on my old plot on other side of the site a few years ago trying to get rid of some glass and i ended up digging down about 2 ft to find i had dug up a window frame including glass from where the houses were many years ago and i am sure i was digging into clay then .

think i might try both ideas and see what works best they will be covered with membrane so hopfully it will nly be water that goes down and noting else but you watch i will do this and we wont get any rain for ages   what puddles were there yesterday have pretty much gone now .

If the soil is not clay based and the water table is not too high- Then digging over the run would improve drainage no end. Doesn't have to be veg patch quality but level it out as much as you can--and keep leveling. The chooks will scratch around and make piles of soil for you.

I am on Clay and although my run is covered-In the Recent rain we had it did flood. I had kept it dug over last year and it was just a matter of waiting till the top surface drained a bit and then fork it over. I normally fork over the run once a month and never clean it out. No smell as the poo disappears into the clay and has turned the Clay soil into something akin to John Innes compost with the action of the chooks scratching.

appartently the site is mostly clay based , this afternoon i dug a hole about a foot deep where the puddles were and placed 4 bricks in each corner and then placed a pavement sized slab over the hole onto the bricks so most of the puddle area is hiden but i cant dig very deep on some of the run as the tree rots are quite close to the surface not sure wether its worth just putting up with the mud or not think i have to many birds in the run to try and cover the whole run with membrane and bark as long as the weather is good the weekend i am going to have a right good sort out in the run the weekend .

p.s we are on a natural water table

one thing that is not allowed is ducks :( :( :( if i got just one duck i would be of the site and i would adore ducks .
