Hi all!
my Speckledy has suddenly developed a huge swelling on her cheek.
I've tried to snap it, not so easy, but is is basically solid, pink, doesn't feel hot and doesnt seem to bother the chicken.
My first though was that she had been stung - but has anyone seen anything like this?

Cheers Nick

Sting or possibly a tick Nick. Ticks can be picked up in areas frequented by deer and was a possible problem in Dordogneshire. Looks rather big for a sting. We did have a chicken develop a tumour the size of a golf ball within a week on her backside, but I doubt that's it. Could be a cyst as they grow fast. But around the head area is a favoured spot for ticks, usually on the comb or wattles, as they are sticking their heads into the undergrowth.

Guess free ranging it could be a tick. In a secure run a sting is far more likely.

Thanks Chrismahon!
Looking more closely, it is her earlobe that is swollen up.
There are lots of ticks around, the cats get them all the time, and sometimes even us humans...
Do you reckon I should do anything, or wait and see? I could take her to the vet on monday I guess..
Of course I'm off on holiday in three days, leaving my unfortunate parents with the problem.....

That looks more like an infection of some sort, because it looks like the ear is involved it might be an idea for a vet to have a look and probably prescribe an antibiotic and maybe an anti-inflammatory. Are your other birds OK Nick? Any signs or history of sniffles in the flock?

Everyone seems absolutely fine - that bird included (despite having most of her tail feathers pulled out by a dog yesterday)
It is definitely going down - but I've done a bit of research and I see where you are coming from re an infection. If it keeps on shrinking, hopefully she is getting over it...
*sigh* pesky birds...

Well, its still going down. I guess it was an infection, but she is getting over it. Glad not to have to give antibiotics - never ideal....
Oddly, I seem to have a similarly swollen gland under my own ear. I wonder if I have bird flu....
Hmmmm

Well, to finish the thread - it got better!
Just went down by itself.
