why do we raise chooks?

Hi guys, its me.. norris... once again...

I have read a lot of post in this thread and to be honest a lot of the post are really great... now while reading the said thread, a question came into me... for me and all of you guys... its really not that hard to answer... hahah just want to hear different opinions of my co-members...

the question is: why do you/me raise a chook? and what are our intentions?

to start off... i will be the first one to answer...
- to be honest i really do not have intentions of raising chooks... last month my cousin gave me three chicks and now they are growing... i seem to like the fact that i can handle such tasks... feeding, bathing, playing and cleaning... now i am really looking into coop designs because i will to pursue the chooks... as of now my primary intension would be getting eggs from them... lol i think its really fun when you get the first egg and i intend to make the flock bigger.... haha

I originally wanted hens for a couple of reasons - when I was a child Mum & Dad were doing their self-sufficiency thing & hens (along with geese, ducks & various other animals) were part & parcel of that & it was my "job" to collect the eggs & help care for the hens. I loved hens & have wanted them since we got married almost 17 years ago, mainly as pets & partly as egg-layers. Am also trying (in my own small way) to be more self-sufficient wrt food (hard when my OH thinks that if the supermarkets provide food why should we go to the effort of growing/raising our own, though he is slowly coming round to the idea).
 
I originally got chickens many years ago when my 9-yer-old daughter wore me down in the end by crying herself to sleep for two weeks because she wanted chickens. We got 8 Silkie bantam chicks, a few days old, and reared them all successfully. Unfortunately 6 of them were boys..... We did rehome these and the other two lived to a great age, became very tame and bossed all the bigger hens around that we eventually added to the flock.
Now I'm retired, I got the bug again two years ago when looking after my friend's hens when he was on holiday. I keep ours mainly for eggs, but I also just enjoy watching them living their busy, happy lives and I think they make the garden look a lot more attractive and interesting as they move about foraging.
 
We have had chickens for about 6 months or so now...I love watching them grow and to see them do their thing. I love hatching baby chicks! They are so neat to watch and believe it or not they are sweet little snugglers!

There are so may reasons to keep them. I think they make lovely pets that also provide tasty eggs. They are really interesting and amusing to watch and are so attractive in the garden and good for the garden as their poo enriches the soil. They do cause some damage to plants etc which can make me mad :evil: :evil: :evil: but are so lovable you have to forgive them. Its great also to hatch and nuture chicks and the different breeds of chicken I find endlessly interesting. :-)17
 
I've always had hens - and in France I bred them for eating and for the eggs :o but now I live here and have seen so many lovely breeds (I've got 17 breeds some of them in up to 5 different colours) and I now breed rare and pure breed exhibition poultry - so I show and being newish (nearly 4 years in GB) I've met some lovely people who have become REAL friends - thanks to my birds, i've got friends, a life and something to eat
 
Hi, I'm into the while self sufficiancy thing so I raise my chooks for eggs and meat. The eggs taste great and has got me making things in the kitchen I wouldn't normally do like pasta, and unfortunately more cakes although they are yummy! I feed my chooks grain only so it' all natural which I thinks helps for the quality amd taste of both the eggs and meat. There is also the fun side especially when it comes to raising chicks or having a broody raise her own :-)
