Hi

Can anyone give me any clues why my white silkie is a funny shade of yellow? She seems well and is eating okay but looks a bit strange as she is more yellow than white. Is she deficient in something?

I thought the white birds had to be kept out of sunlight or they turn yellow. That's certainly the case with Orpingtons. Saw a purple Silkie not long back. She was white until the owners daughter decided to bathe her then add a bit of colour to the water.
Has she just moulted? I ask because the basic brands of layers pellets (about 99.9% of the ones used for egg producers in this Country) contain three permitted chemical yolk colourants (gives yolks a golden yellow colour without grass or maize) and I wonder if they have got into the feathers as they grew. What brand of feed do you use?

Hi

That is interesting - I have just moved them into a new pen/coop which is in the sun and of course, we have had a bit over the last week!! She has also just moulted. I feed on Garvo Layers Pellets

Any comments gratefully received!

Garvo layers should be OK - I know Garvo also do a feed for birds that need extra yellow colour, eg for legs, so the ordinary kind shouldn't have anything in it. Certainly my 2 white hybrids have never been affected by it. I think it would take more sun than we've had at this time of year to make any difference, (or than we've had all summer, come to that.)
They haven't been dustbathing in any yellow builders' sand, have they? Just a thought!

Garvo is a very good feed, however unless the "white feather" garvo is fed, it will turn white birds a bit yellow. It was orignally designed for yellow legged birds, especially wyandottes, where a good yellow leg is prized.

Thank you for that - apart from the yellow colour on her feathers will it do her any harm?

No, none at all. At least she's not purple!

So you know for next year. Get Garvo white feather layers pellets. I might get some yellow stuff for our Wyandottes as their legs go rather pale when they start laying.

Thanks for that - however as she is with a golden one and a black one, what will it do to their feathers?
If she was purple I could start a new trend lol

Perhaps Garvo could launch a new Rainbow Mix?

P.S. Have looked again at my white hybrids and I suppose they are a bit sort of pale golden on top - any colour short of purple is fine by me as long as they lay well!

Hi Marigold - garvo rainbow mix would be great!!! My white girl is definitely yellow not gold in various places
but she seems fine and happy so I suppose I shouldn't worry. Just very interested in why?
