Hi, I have just bought 2 White Crested Polands whom I have called Penny & Tuppence ('cos they're only 'ickle) and wondered if anyone has any advice on trimming around their eyes? At the moment they just keep bumping into everything and while it may be comical to watch, it must be scary for the girls. Will I be able to trim close to their eyes or would it make them bleed if I cut too far down the feathers? Help! Failing that I'll have to buy some scrunchies LOL.

We had to trim around a wound recently. The feathers were very fine and wouldn't cut cleanly with nail scissors. We used small surgical scissors in the end. The main flight feathers are 'live' (contain fluid tissue)towards the base so, on the very rare occasions we've had to trim we leave at least an inch at the end. The fine little feathers we cut around the wound we left proportionately less, about 5mm. I would think that would be OK for the feathers around the eyes. I worry that they will flinch during the process and the scissors will go in their eye. Look in the PP breeders directory for Polands and ask them what they do.

Thank you chrismahon for your reply. I finally plucked up courage to have a go. My husband held them while I trimmed. I just hope I've taken enough off. I'll keep my eye on them over the next couple of days and if not, I'll have to have another go. Zoe

I know only what I have picked up about these birds from my neighbour, but feather trimming is fine up to the point where the quill has just begun. I have read that you can put a band around the topknot and that you need to watch out for pests there as the birds can't preen there ...... i am no expert, I just wanted to contribute and see what our experts might say :D ... I'll be able to council my friend better then ;)

:-)17 Hi, My birds seem a lot happier since I trimmed round their eyes. They stayed very calm whilst I cut. They've stopped walking in circles and aren't bumping into things anymore. I think I'll trim just a couple more feathers though as they keep stretching their heads to see stuff .(I think my hens are very nosy) Thanks everyone for your replies.
