i have a white cochin cockrel and some black cochin hens
does anyone know what colour i may get if i hatch the eggs
from these awaiting someones comments please Tony

Ok the pullets will hatch white/yellow and the cockrells black. Now if you will get some splash ones not sure when fully feathered.

thank you for that information i will keep it
in my diary do you know then how i would produce blue would i
need a blue hen or cockeral and would i cross blue to blue

Hi, Tony1 I only understand a little about sexlinked, so as far as blue chicks IMHO would be to get say 3 hens to one cockeral and breed pure blues.
If it was earlier in the year I would sudjest getting some eggs or even chicks.

On my understanding of colour genetics Tony, blue is a dilute of black.I'm hopeless at describing this, but,if a black chook is genetically Bb,the big B is black, and the blue gene is little b.
So you would need to mate 2 chooks that you know carried Bb,but, you will not know for sure which genes the young will inherit,so you would get a mixture of BB (Black) Bb(look black but carrying blue gene) and hopefully bb(look blue and also carry blue). This is obviously a very basic understanding, and then when you add the sex linked colour genes,I def can't explain it.
so,strogly suggest you follow Ladychicks advise, and buy 'blue' chooks or hatching eggs from a reputable supplier/breeder.

If someone has a better understanding of the genetics,or,I've made a complete fowl up-please do tell me.

Hi Tony1

It's a complex subject and I don't know enough about it to go into the Black / White combination every time I think about it I get a different result! Blues however are not 'pure bred', they carry two colour genes (Bb) and therefore no amount of breeding selection will ever make them breed true - if you breed Blue X Blue you get 50% Blue (Bb), 25% Black (BB), 25% Splash (bb) which is according to Mendals law of inheritance.

There's a little info here on Colour Breeding - Blue Birds

i use this tool to help predict colours, it actually shows they will produce all black offspring as white is a recessive gene to black

to confuse further, black is dominant because it can carry other colour genes, the second letter.so technically, black can produce all the other colours. It will all depend on what genes both parents are carrying and which ones are passed on to offspsring.
It is far easier to use a predictor tool.white is weird, with most animals that are white, there will be somewhere on their body some hairs/skin that is another colour.Genetically, the colour for that animal will be this hidden one, that isn't always obvious to the naked eye.
Albinoism is even harder, true albino's do not happen as easily as we think.White mice with pink eyes are not albino's,albino mice can't breed, took selective breeding by mouse breeders years ago to produce pink eyed whites.
Do albino chickens ever happen?

That calculator is very good, it certainly makes things easier... what's confused me though is you can get dominent white as well as recessive... Ahh! :o

well ive certainly put the cat amont the pigeons parden the pun
but what you have all said does make sense in there own way
i will try the white with the black and will make enquires about the
blue cochin unless you guys have any for sale again may i thank you all for
the advise you have given me its all written down ready for next year
