We have several baby chicks that we have under a light...5 of them are 3 weeks old and 7 of them are banties and they are 2 weeks old. When do we take them out from under the light? The older ones are regular size chickens. We live in the USA in Georgia and during the day it is around 70-80 degrees fahrenheit and it is around 45-60 degrees at night...any suggestions?
Thanks
Brooke

as a rule of thumb i always look at it as 6 weeks being off heat. if the weather is mild 5 weeks may be enough. from when they are about 3-4 weeks old take them out in the garden in a secure run for a few hours at a time to get used to being out but just make sure they are not getting cold. also make sure they dont get wet. another way to tell is when they are feathered and lost the fluff. their heads will stay fluffy for longer but if their bodies are fully feathered they are able to keep their heat in.
