My dear old Black Rock hen who is at least 9 years old is having difficulty walking, this started on Tuesday morning. Although she has been a bit pottery for a while and aloud to be as she is an old lady now, on Monday night she had obviously fallen on her back during the night, scrabbled about and scratched her leg in doing so. I noticed the scratch/blood on her leg, managed to catch her as she isn't the most co operative of hens! put some gamgee/vet wrap on it and released her with her friends, as would upset her too much to be apart. I had taken her to the vets last year with leg problems and they gave me some anti inflamatory to give her, I still have some left so have been giving her some at night. Although she eats, drinks, eats lunch and tea tea time treats, and tries to scratch the ground still, she is now very unsteady on her legs, espcially when she comes out of the house in the morning- flaps about a bit to keep her balance, but when caught she fights like mad to be released?
What do you do? So very sad as I have had her such a long time. I have made enquiries at the vet about having her put to sleep with an injection? usually the hen decides as you need to put it out of its misery, but with her its not the same?
