Hi again all

Hope you can offer me some advice. I have a bluebell pol (about 20 weeks) whom I thought I'd heard sneeze a couple of times earlier in the week. She's been eating and drinking but a bit quieter than when I first got her. Earlier today she was sitting outside sleeping with her head under her wing. I've just been to take out some treats to the hens and she was eating grain from my hand but very quietly and I think her breathing sounds a bit wheezy. Should I be concerned or should I just assume it's a cold and it will take its course?

Thanks for your help

Hi Helen,
Tim told me a very usefull tip for checking for wheezing, pick her up,and put your ear on her back.If she is wheezing, you will be able to hear it clearly.
It probably is a cold, but, depending on how wheezy she is,it could be better to take her to be examined by a vet.As it could just be a cold,or something else.
Does she have any other symptoms,ie runny eyes, are her comb and wattle their usual colour,or any diahorea.
Keeping my finger's crossed that it is just a cold.

There is a hen medicine called Respite, that does help wheezy, snuffly hens a lot and is available over the counter and also on-line.
Good luck and do let us all know how she gets on.Don't be paranoid,it most likely is a hen common cold.

Hi Lydia

Thanks for the info. Florence seems much brighter today and no sign of any wheezing. Once the sun came out and she was able to wander at will around the garden her mood improved no end. I did have a listen to her back (aren't feather lovely against your cheek!) and she sounded ok so thanks for that tip. She's also less sleepy today so all seems well.

Hopefully, I'll learn quickly and be able to help someone else sometime.

Thanks again.

Hi Helen
I would keep a close eye on her and maybe get some garlic granules for her. There is a lot of respiratory infections around in poultry at present and she could be brewing the first signs of it. I've had a number of mine with mild respiratory infections, in fact I've got a Buff Orp hen in isolation at present with one. Like your BlueBell she's pottering about but you can hear a little wheezing in her breathing.

Hi Ann

Thanks for your help. I will definitely keep an eye on her and try and take some preventative measures. I'm probably not all that far away from you - we're right on the Notts/Leics border.

Just had a look at your website. Your chickens look absolutely stunning!

Give her some ACV (20ml to 1 litre of water - will double check this ratio) & crush up a garlic clove in her water. Dont use in galvanised drinkers though - only plastic. Hope your hen is feeling a bit better :)

Thanks everyone. I've been using ACV over the last few days (in a plastic drinker) and she certainly seems much more with it. Still keeping a close eye on all of them. Her comb and wattle are quite bright red which I'm assuming is normal for her (i've only had her for 2 weeks and I'm totally new to this).

Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Helen

Really pleased she's ok now :D .It is so worrying when we're not sure :? .
